Match Report
This game promised to be a cracker since both these two teams had easily won the first game of the home and away season. Both teams were strengthened by additions made at the last minute; the Dockers welcomed back rookie of the year Guy Joel, Marc-Olivier Brault was making his AFL Quebec debut and Ronan Shaughnessy was going to be managed throughout the game and would get a few minutes here and there to give the more fit players a bit of relief. The Eagles were still without 3 of their best players. Matt Davidson and Tony Irish are out injured and Eliot Kempster was still MIA after a long night of partying. The Eagles did have William Tessier making his much awaited comeback while Sam St-Laurent and Remi Mathieu were making their debuts in the league.
The game got off to a fast start with two quick goals by the Dockers. Emily Legault scored a beauty and added another one during the quarter. This hotly contested match was blown wide open by the Dockers new additions. Randy, Matthew Priess, Marc McHugh all registered goals during the quarter and the seamen were up by a whopping 25 points at quarter time. The only bright spot for the Eagles was the strong play of William Tessier and Matty “Eagle head” Payne’s goal.
The Dockers started the second quarter much like they did the first one with a few great plays and it showed on the scoreboard. They had the wind in this quarter which meant they had an even easier time getting the ball up field. The Eagles can count themselves lucky to have only conceded 4 goals off 12 scoring shots. Matt Priess alone had 4 behinds to go along with his goal. For perhaps the first time in the history of the West Island Eagles, they were held scoreless during a quarter registering only 3 inside 50s and often being obligated to play a much more defensive role than the one they are used to playing. It remains to be seen if the Eagle captain can rally the troops with an inspiring half time peech with the Eagles down by 57 points.
The 3rd quarter started off very badly for the Eagles with a quick goal by Ronan Shaughnessy who smelt blood and decided to juice up his starts a few easy goals. However, the Eagles were a lot more combative during this quarter and they came back with 3 consecutive goals and it looked like we might have a second monster comeback in as many games. The hope soon faded as Matt Priess, Toby Campain and Anna Berfort (getting her first AFL Quebec goal) put the game out of reach for the West Island Eagles. The Dockers are up by 63 points and don’t look like they’ll be stopped any time soon.
The last quarter was a fairly straightforward affair since the Dockers had the game in the bag. This didn’t stop the Dockers from pilling on the points. Toby Campain and Ronan Shaughnessy combined for 3 goals while Brian Lee making his long awaited comeback putting the final icing on the cake. Again the Eagles failed to record a single scoring shot this quarter and were soundly beaten by the biggest margin in AFL Quebec home and away season history: 97 points.
The final score Old Montreal Dockers 18.14 (122) to 4.1 (25) West Island Eagles.
