MENAI DRAGONS BASKETBALL CLUB INC

Is a community based volunteer sporting group that strives to introduce young people and adults to the sport of basketball and provide them with opportunities to play the game at various levels.

*As with many groups starting out in new suburbs MDBC began with parents, from basketball backgrounds, looking to give their children the same experiences.

*In the mid to late 80’s a small group of parents met the GM of Sutherland Basketball Association and mapped out a plan to establish a structured club.

The original members were Stephen Bell, Andy Andreijunas and Mick Carlisle with Colleen Corkeron the GM of Sutherland District Basketball Association.

*From a few teams the club quickly grew, along with the Menai area and many other sports, to be the largest basketball club in the Sutherland Shire.

*As well as entering Junior and Senior, male and female teams in the Sutherland Basketball Association competitions MDBC established learn to play competitions in the Menai area using Menai High School gymnasium as a home court.

*These competitions expanded to include age groups from Under 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 years and became a feature of the Saturday sporting culture in the district.

*In September 2004 Sutherland Shire Council opened the,

MENAI INDOOR SPORTS CENTRE, and a new era for numerous indoor sports began.

*MENAI DRAGONS BASKETBALL CLUB was active at all stages in the development of this facility and have stepped up to use the four basketball courts as much as possible.

*Currently MDBC runs Miniball and Junior basketball on Saturdays in two competitions per year. (Summer, Oct.-March; Winter, April-Sept.) The age groups have training and ‘learn to play’ sessions as well as games in structured teams. Interested Junior players are also encouraged to take up refereeing, coaching and administrative tasks.(see Menu for details)

*Senior players are being catered for in Men’s and Women’s competitions on Monday nights.

*A mixed competition is run on Tuesday nights with male and female, junior and senior players participating in social basketball.

*MDBC teams that play in the SDBAL competitions at Sutherland Basketball Stadium train at Menai Indoor Sports Centre in their age groups on Monday and Tuesday afternoons.

*The volunteers i.e. administrators, coaches, managers, referees, supporters and players of the MENAI DRAGONS BASKETBALL CLUB can be very proud of their achievements over the past 20 years.
