Lady Reds Fall to Roar

Brisbane Roar downed the Adelaide United Lady Reds 3-1 at the Adelaide Shores Football Centre on Sunday afternoon in Round 12 of the Westfield W-League.

All three of Brisbane’s goals came inside the first half courtesy of Emily Gielnik, Kirsty Yallop and Gabrielle Marzano, with Abbey Dahlkemper grabbing the consolation goal for the Lady Reds.

It was end to end stuff inside the opening 15 minutes, as both sides deployed fast paced passing systems but failed to deliver any end product.

Adelaide started to take control soon after as Dahlkemper started to make her mark on the match, with the best chance of the game earlier on falling to her on 22 minutes however she was unable to direct her shot on target.

Brisbane broke the deadlock on 27 minutes through Gielnik after a corner was played short to Angela Beard who sent in a looping cross towards the back post where Gielnik beat Adealide ‘keeper Kaitlyn Savage in the air.

The Roar started to put their stamp on the game in the minutes after, as Amy Chapman and Marzano started troubling the Lady Reds defence.

Yallop stretched the Roars lead on 39 minutes with a strike from the edge of the D into the bottom corner at Savage’s post; a minute later Marzano, who had been a constant threat down the left all game, caught Savage unaware with a delightful chip into the top corner.

The Lady Reds came out firing from the get-go in the second half, with Dahlkemper again being the main attacking focal point.

The second 45 saw the Roar camped inside their own half but Adelaide’s finishing let them down.

Dahlkemper was rewarded for a fighting display with a consolation goal in the final minute of stoppage time, with a header off the crossbar.

Brisbane now sit on equal points with Adelaide and Newcastle on 12 points.
