Early morning fitness group
At 5.30am this morning 5 keen people met for an early morning walk before the sun rose. Amy, Kira and Laura were the girls brave enough to join Ms Barr and Ms Ricci for a lovely walk along the banks of the Derwent River. Whilst brave, the girls were dressed for the coolish weather in UGG BOOTS!!! Not really the speediest walking shoes. Despite their limitations they managed about 50 minutes of walking, some exercise on the newly installed fitness equipment and posed for a few pics. A great effort girls…we hope to see you again tomorrow morning.
Port Arthur
After our 6am wake up and 7am breakfast, we set off at 8am for our 96km (2 hours) trip to Port Arthur. Unfortunately we didn’t get very far when the first of our sickies was sick, reported by Chris who happened to be sitting next to him. After a short stop, clean up and change of clothes we were back on the road thanks to Josh who volunteered to give his track pants to Matt and to wear Vanessa's. We almost got him in the grey and pink fluro. What was fantastic about this incident was the way each member of the group supported Matt to ensure that he was ok and could enjoy the rest of the day.
On arrival at Port Arthur we handed out lunches and made our way to the start of the walking tour. The group was spilt in two and each one left with a different guide. For the next 45 minutes we walked around the ruins of Port Arthur hearing stories about the convicts who were sent there and the hardships they faced.
Doo Town, Blow Hole and Tesselated Pavement
After our tour and cruise around Port Arthur we left for a look at surrounding attractions, namely the Blow Hole, Tesselated Pavements and a clifftop view of the Remarkable's Caves. Unfortunately everyone was a bit cold and hungry so we opted for the short look rather than the a trip into the caves.
The Blow Hole was an impressive site but the walk along the beach across the Tesselated Pavements was probably the favourite. to get to these attractions we also ahd to go through Doo Town. Here each house had a name with "Doo" in it and John, our bus driver got us to read each one as we passed by.
Port Arthur Ghost Tour
After a yummy dnner of either fish and chips or pizza and chips we headed out for the much anticipated ghost tour. The group was divided into two and each was allocated their own guide. The drama associated with each story told was what made the tour quite spooky, too much for some who returned to the starting point. For others, they made it through, and finished with a lot more questions than when they began.
We then boarded the bus for our long journey home to Hobart. I think some even managed to sleep while other recounted their stories.
