Women’s Match Report – Swan Hill vs Epsom 29/7/12

The Swans started well with most of the play and numerous scoring chances from Isabella Salvo, Jodie Lea and Erin Raggat. A Swans corner kick after nineteen minutes taken by Natalie Von Wirtz Matthews was into the box, the ball spills left to Ieesha Kelly O’Brien who gets around a defender, shoots and the powerful shot gets through the keepers gloves to score. Now Epsom’s corner kick is right into the box and a frantic scrimmage follows but is finally cleared.

At the thirteenth minute Maggie Smith intercepts in our forward half, passes around a defender, goes goal ward, shoots and again the ball slips through the goalies gloves. Two minutes later Lea receives a pass at the top of the square, falls but still in control of the ball, gets up and around an opponent and goes goal ward to score. Epsom forward moves are either being cut off or long balls run down by Swans defenders Von Witz Matthews, Allison Lewin, Tara Thomas and Megan Williamson.

Just before the end of the half Thomas receives a pass inside our forward half, skilfully eludes all Epsom’s defenders to go one on one with the keeper to score and repeats this feat again with one minute to go for the Swans to be five nil up at half time.

Epsom came out firing in the second half with nearly all the play in their forward zone for the first five minutes with Swans Chrissie Steward keeping well resulting in no score. Sixty minutes gone and Brittany Ciancio sends a ball from half way up the line, follows it up and intercepts and Epsom pass to cross left to Smith who runs into goal to score. Swans forward Salvo has another one on one scoring chance with the keeper but like her many other chances this match the shot either goes wide or straight to the keeper.

Epsom finally scored four minutes later from a corner kick landing on the goal line which falls from the keepers grasp to score. At the eighty sixth minute and we saw the goal of the match when Smith gets onto a long ball sent down by Lea. Smith runs to the right of goal and the shot looks to be wide of goal when it bends like Beckems to somehow slither between the keeper and the post.

With two minutes to go a Swans long ball is sent left for Kelly-O’Brien who scores again to finish with three goals as did Smith, Thomas with two and Leas with one helping the Swans to win seven goals to Epsom’s one.

A great team effort.
