New canvass to keep Kiribati athletes happy
By Matai Akauola in London
01 AUGUST 2012 LONDON (PACNEWS) ----- The Secretary General of Kiribati National Olympic Committee Rota Onorio went shopping yesterday for his athletes at the massive Westfield Mall, just outside the Games Village in Stratford.
“Just going to buy some canvass for my athletes to keep them happy for the games,” said Birati who’s better to known as Rota.
Rota’s three athletes- David Kaingaue and Nooa Takooa will be running the men’s and women’s 100m on the weekend with weightlifter David Katoatau competing in the 94kg class on Saturday.
And like most teams at the Olympics, athletes have been warned about maintaining their diet.
Rota says his two athletics runners had to restrain themselves after they got stuck into the food when they arrived.
“They can enjoy after their race but right it is the officials who are helping themselves to the food at the dining hall.”
This is Rota’s first Olympics and something they have been observing is the standards and how the islands can improve to get Olympic standards.
“That’s important for us.
“We need to prepare more so maybe for a longer period or more intense, more exposure.”
Team Kiribati concentrated their efforts in trying to get their boxers to qualify for London 2012 but unfortunately they missed out and universality or wild card entries do not apply to boxing….PACNEWS (PINA)
