VJBL Classic/Nunawading Tournament

A number of teams have made inquiries about the Victorian Junior Basketball League Classic and Nunawading Invitational Tournament, both of which will be held in Melbourne June 7 – 9, 2014.

Participation in these tournaments is not a requirement of the Norths Bears Junior Representative Program and decisions to attend/compete in the tournaments are made by individual teams in consultation with parents, coaches and managers.

The NSBA will administer the entry of teams and also the dissemination of information such as update bulletins, draws and other tournament related administration.

VJBL Classic – Invitation only

The VJBL Classic is for Division One teams only and teams are invited by the VJBL if they are in the top two of their MJL division at the cut-off point. This “cut-off” point is usually mid-April and teams will be advised of their qualification as soon as the association has been advised by the VJBL.

If a team is invited, there is no obligation to attend, as this is not a requirement of the commitments of the program. The VJBL Classic has club teams from Victoria, NSW and South Australia compete.

The confirmed venues for this event in 2014 are:

  • Under 12/14 Girls and Boys – Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, Albert Park
  • Under 16 Girls and Boys – Sandringham Basketball Stadium, Sandringham
  • Under 18 Girls and Boys – Frankston Basketball Centre, Seaford

Nunawading Tournament – open invitational tournament

The Nunawading Tournament is one of the largest invitational junior basketball tournaments in Australia and is played at various venues in and around the eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

The tournament offers different divisions in all age groups and usually attracts teams from Victoria, South Australian and NSW.

Costs

The costs for participating in these tournaments are not part of the annual representative fees. Attendance at the tournaments is on a “user pays” basis and will include:

  • Travel costs
  • Accommodation expenses
  • Food
  • Tournament entry fees

Players will also be asked to contribute towards the cost of travel and accommodation of the coach and team manager attending these tournaments. Team managers will liaise with parents on costs and provide a breakdown of the per participant costs to parents/families.

The NSBA will enter teams for the Queen’s Birthday tournaments and collect the entry fees from the teams. As an indication, the team fees for the VJBL Classic in 2013 were $550/team and $370/team for the Nunawading Tournament.

All players playing in Norths Bears teams at the above tournaments must be registered members of the NSBA, actively playing in a NSBA local competition and be up to date with the 2014 Norths Bears JRP fees.

If any coach, manager or parent has any questions about the tournaments, please do not hesitate to contact the NSBA Development Manager Peter Lonergan at any time.
