About Us

The North Otago Basketball Association was established in the mid 1900’s to help to establish a pathway for young interested basketball players to participate and enjoy the sport.

North Otago Basketball is a unique organisation in the sense that it is looked upon as the sole provider and governing body of Basketball in the Waitaki region.  It is also unique in its dependence on volunteers in the organisation who give their time and support.

The North Otago Basketball Association experienced considerable growth during the mid to late 1990’s due to the success of the Men’s team and the implementation of the Development Officer which built up our junior programme resulting in great results at south island level and sometimes nationals.  Through this success a real sense of achievement was felt within the community and Basketball was promoted as a fun and exciting sport to be involved with.  However in the early 2000’s there was a period of time when there wasn’t sufficient volunteers involved in Basketball so the Association experienced a lull and kids weren’t receiving adequate coaching which seen our junior teams performed poorly.

In 2007 the Association saw the need to develop a strategic plan as well a constitution to provide direction for the future and re-establish Basketball as a successful sport in the Waitaki region.
In 2008 the Development Officer was re-introduced, the Men’s team “The North Otago Penguins” were resurrected and our junior teams performed well at South Island level with our Un 17 competing at national level. In late 2008 our association became an Incorporated Society.
