Player's Code of Conduct

The purpose of this Wallan Basketball Coach Code of Conduct is to set the standard of behaviour required of every Wallan Basketball representative and domestic player, to ensure all players: (i) enjoy their experience of playing basketball for Wallan; (ii) improve as basketball players; and (iii) assist their team to improve. All players MUST sign and abide by this Code.

Every Wallan Basketball Player MUST at all times:

  • Play for their own enjoyment (i.e. not just to please coaches or parents).

  • Be encouraging and supportive of all team-mates (i.e. through positive and constructive encouragement and communication).

  • Be willing to accept constructive criticism from their coaches.

  • Push themselves to improve by practising hard with 100% commitment (i.e. by training with 100% intensity, focus and effort).

  • Push themselves to improve by playing hard with 100% commitment (i.e. by playing games with 100% intensity, focus and effort).

  • Play each game for the team’s benefit (i.e. by playing unselfishly and not for their individual benefit).

  • Play fairly, with composure and self-discipline, and not wilfully break the rules of basketball (e.g. by committing deliberate fouls).

  • If a Representative player, accept that court time is earned through a combination of demonstrating right attitude (coachability), tenacity, ability (to execute skills, footwork and team role), teamwork (assists), and composure.

  • If a Domestic player, accept that court time is earned through attitude and effort, and that coaches will do their best to ensure equal court time for such players.

  • Respect referees and officials by accepting calls graciously;

  • Show good sportsmanship by interacting with referees, officials, opponents and opposition coaches in a professional, good-humoured manner (e.g. by offering a hand to help opponents up from the floor after a foul is given, and by shaking the hands of all opposition players at the end of each game (with eye contact).

  • Respect the use of WBI facilities by not damaging basketball venues and equipment (e.g. floors, balls, lights & rings) provided by WBI and the opposition.

WALLAN BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION INC. (WBI)

Code of Conduct Agreement

Basketball is a recreational activity for enjoyment and health.

The Wallan Basketball Association Codes of Conduct are therefore intended to assist all Wallan representative and domestic players, coaches, parents and administrators to obtain the maximum benefit and enjoyment from their involvement in basketball.

The WBI Codes of Conduct have also been developed to align with those of Basketball Victoria (BV) which seek to give participants a guide to the expectations of BV for their behaviour and conduct.

As representatives of the Wallan Basketball Association, all players, coaches, parents and administrators are required to agree to and abide by specific behavioural conduct obligations, by signing a WBI Code of Conduct agreement.

It is essential that all Wallan basketball players, coaches, parents and administrators fully read and understand their Code of Conduct obligations.

A breach of a WBI Code of Conduct agreement may result in disciplinary action by the WBI Coach (following approval by the WBI Panthers or Domestic Committee Chair), and/or the Executive Committee of the Association.

In the matter of a serious offence by any player, coach, parent or administrator, individuals may be liable to referral of their conduct to an Association, Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) or BV Tribunal hearing.

Consequences of any WBI Code of Conduct breach by any player, coach, parent or administrator may include:

  • Omission (short-term) or suspension (medium-term) from playing for the team;
  • Permanent de-registration from the Association and/or the VJBL; and/or
  • A fine imposed at the discretion of the WBI, VJBL or BV Tribunal.

Ultimately, whether you are representing the Wallan Basketball Association as a representative or domestic player, coach, parent, legal guardian or administrator, your aim should be to always conduct yourself in a way that ensures the enjoyment of every player in a safe environment, and that reflects the three key WBI Coaching Philosophies:

1. “LET’S SEE HOW GOOD WE CAN GET”.

2. “LET’SHAVEFUNBYCOMPETINGHARD”.

3. “THE STAR OF THE TEAM IS THE TEAM”.
