2011 DIVING DOWNUNDER

Some impressive diving by the Australian divers secured Federation places for the upcoming 2012 London Olympic Games.

Amongst the competitors were many National Representatives who had competed at international events including Olympic and Commonwealth Games, World Juniors, Grand Prixs; and some came straight from the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai. Previous national representatives at these events were Ken Nee Yeoh MAS, Tze Liang Ooi MAS, Traisy Vivien Tukie MAS, James Connor AUS, Rachel Bugg AUS, Matthew Barnard AUS, Sherilyse Gowlett AUS, Anna Gelai AUS, Olivia Carter AUS, Liam Stone NZL.

Opening night included a function for VIPs, local dignitaries & sponsors; followed by a formal Opening Ceremony and then diving competition events. The National anthem was performed by a soloist on 10m platform; there was a local welcome with cultural entertainment from a young Maori kapa haka group and opening remarks made by City Councillor, Jo Coughlan and Wellington Airport CEO, Steve Fitzgerald; with the ceremonies completed by young WHiPA divers taking the plunge.

The Event was also well supported by high quality technical officials including current FINA TDC members; Ann Sissons and Edwin Chong along with retired TDC member; Robin Hood; plus 8 certified FINA Judges from 4 countries and several Nationally Qualified Judges.

The 13 & Under boys 1m event had outstanding individual dives including third placed diver Muhammad Nazreen Abdullah from MAS scoring 10’s from all judges for one of his dives. He was beaten by consistently high scores from divers from Hong Kong and China’s Shandong Province. The future of the Pacific Rim region is very exciting with such talented performers showing their class at this age.

Performances and Partnerships were the key to success of these events. Wellington City Council and WHiPA’s major sponsors, BNZ, Contact Energy, Infratil and Wellington International Airport combined with event sponsors and many volunteer hours to leave lasting impressions and a commitment to return.
