Athletics PNG was formed in 1961 and will continue to celebrate its 50th Anniversary into the early part of 2012.
We are the Recognised National Federation for the sport of Athletics in PNG and are affiliated to the IAAF (the World Governing Body for the sport) and to the PNG National Olympic Committee. Athletics PNG is responsible for promoting , developing and controlling the Sport in the country in accordance with its Constitution and the rules of the IAAF. It has the sole right to select athletes to represent PNG in overseas competitions, and to select the country’s representatives at overseas meetings.
Athletics PNG currently has affiliated members in eight provinces (Port Moresby , Morobe,Madang , Eastern Highlands , Simbu, East Sepik , New Ireland , and East New Britain). It seeks, through its development plan to be launched in January 2012 to reach a situation whereby there is regular athletic activity in at least 15 provinces.
The Powers vested in Athletics PNG by its Constitution are exercised by an Executive Committee consisting of seven members; being a President , Vice President , Secretary , Treasurer and three committee members.Sub committees may , from time to time, be appointed to perform certain functions.
The principal activities of Athletics PNG are to stage national and regional championships and other national competitions as deemed necessary from time to time. APNG is responsible for selecting athletes to represent PNG at Pacific Games, Commonwealth Games, World Championships and Olympic Games and appointing managers and coaches to accompany its teams overseas. Other overseas competitions are used to assist athletes and coaches to prepare for these major events.
