PACIFIC SPORTS PARTNERSHIPS (PSP) UPDATE

The Pacific Sports Partnerships (PSP) is delivered through partnerships between the Australian Sports Commission with Australian sport organisations and their counterpart regional and national sport federations in the Pacific.

The PSP was launched in 2009 to strengthen sporting cooperation with the Pacific and contribute to the priorities of Australia’s aid program in the region. The program involves a particular focus to support grass roots sport and capability building of national sporting federations, while contributing to identify development outcomes. Five sports are currently supported to deliver activities during the first phase of the PSP: cricket, football, netball, rugby league and rugby union.

9th OSFO Assembly in Nadi

The 9th OSFO assembly was held in Nadi, Fiji on April 18th. Over 20 sports were represented and there were many motions put forward as part of OSFO's effort to forge stronger working relationships with its partners.

OSFO would like to thank ONOC and the PGC for their support, and look forward to the next quadrennial as we all focus on how we can build capacity in our members - the National Sports Federations more efficiently and cost effectively.

OSFO Executive meeting November 6th

Meeting discussed the outcomes from the recent PGC assembly that impact OSFO members (see attached overview) and the current OSFO activities. Each member provided an update including the current financial position, our response to the Healthy Islands through Sports initiative, planning for the 2013 assembly and a review of our website. Will spoke of more uptake on the recent member survey and the results will be circulated as soon as they are collated.

Next meeting is scheduled for December 13th, 4pm.

8th OSFO General Assembly, Novotel, Suva Fiji

Today at the Novotel in Suva, OSFO ran its 8th General Assembly with 18 sports in attendance and several observers. Numbers were down on previous years due to the NOCs meeting in Moscow in April. This year sees the addition of a Sport Development conference attended by sport development officers and OSFO members which will run until Saturday.

Schacht a candidate for Volleyball Presidency International

The Australian Volleyball Federation has recently announced Chairman of TACDC Chris Schacht is a candidate for the Presidency of the Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB). The other two candidates are  Ary Graca Filho  from Brazil and Doug Beal  from USA. The elections will take place on 21st September in Anaheim, California, USA.

OSFO assembly 2011

The OSFO assembly began today in New Caledonia.  Members from 24 sports federations joined the 17 National Olympic Committeess in workshops to discuss the issues relating to sport development in Oceania.  The workshops consisted of presentations on the Readiness Assessment Tool(RAT) and the new Sports Educations Framework.  At their conclusion delegates broke into discussion groups to explore how best to implement both programs in their respective country or sport.

Basketball's Lorraine Landon honoured with Order of Australia Medal

Basketball's Lorraine Landon was named on Australia Day recently, as the recipient of the Order of Australia Medal in recognition of a lifetime of service to basketball.   January 26th marks the anniversary of white settlement in Port Jackson (what is now Sydney Harbour) and is celebrated with a national holiday. The Australian Government uses the occasion to name a list of distinguished Australians who deserve recognition for outstanding achievement and community service

BCO Executive Committee elect new President

OSFO Sec Gen Chet Gray presents at the PGC AGM

OSFO's secretary general, Chet Gray presented to the Pacific Games Council Assembly and from all reports was well received by countries and the council. Chet took with him the thoughts of all members and the resolutions passed were consistent with member requests.

Australian Sports Commission presentation at the OSFO annual assembly

Martin Roberts, the manager of the Commission's partnership programs, spoke about the ASC Partnership programs in 5 sports and the work of the Australian Sports Outreach Program in 7 countries. Martin highlighted the obvious gap in funding for the middle band of sports activity that sits between community sport and the elite.

The 6th OSFO assembly opened today with a steady stream of sports arriving in Nadi for a few days of lively discussion and information forums. Australian Volleyball sends beach volleyballs to Fiji

Teresa Henderson from the AVF today presented OSFO with some volleyballs that will be delivered to Fiji's successful women's program. The Fiji women made it through three rounds of the last World Cup and are currently training to not only repeat the performance but improve on it.

OSFO Executive Planning Workshop Completed

OSFO executive members, along with Sport Business Partners and the ASC, finished what was a productive couple of days evaluating and planning OSFO's role in sport development over the next four years. "Being in our sixth year of operation it was time that we reflected on the past, and set some goals for the future," said Chet Gray, OSFO's Secretary General. "We look forward to reviewing our work with our members at our assembly in Nadi in March."

4th OSFO Assembly gets underway in Nadi, Fiji

The 4th Olympic Sports Federations of Oceania (OSFO) Assembly got underway today in Fiji. The annual event is staged alongside the Oceania National Olympic Committees (ONOC) annual congress and gives sport and NOCs the opportunity to discuss issues relating to the development of sport in the region. The major focus this year was to review the South Pacific Games from last August in Samoa and to present a voice to the Pacific Games Council on improvements moving forward. Another focus was updating all delegates on programs like the Oceania Sport Education Program, Australian Sports Commission programs in the Pacific region, The Oceania Foundation and new developments in OceaniaSport.

OSFO Updates

PACIFIC SPORTS PARTNERSHIPS (PSP) UPDATE

On Wednesday May 29th the Australian Sports Commission conducted a briefing for all Australian and Oceania Sports Federations on their new PSP program. This program is an extension of its existing one that currently invovles five sports - Netball, Football, Rugby, League and Cricket.  The program is now open to all Austrlaian sports but requires that they submit an application in partnership with their Oceania body.

OSFO can support sports currently in the program and those wanting to apply this round.  We will be conducting some webinars over the next week to act as forums for discussion.
