Bergers make it two from two with late goal

Heidelberg has secured a second win in as many matches this season with a last gasp 1-0 victory over Werribee City at Galvin Park on Sunday afternoon.

A goal with ten minutes to play from substitute Andrew Cartanos was enough to secure a deserved victory for the visitors on a very windy day in Werribee.

With conditions making it difficult for either side to keep the ball, the match began as a scrappy contest with neither side able to create many clear cut opportunities throughout the 90 minutes.

It was Heidelberg who created the first sight on goal with midfielder Kosta Kanakaris played through on goal but his effort was straight at goalkeeper Frano Saric.

Fresh off scoring two long range bullets against Pascoe Vale last weekend, Daniel Vasilevski tried his luck from range again in the 14th minute but his effort rattled the cross bar.

Heidelberg was then dealt a major blow as star striker Kaine Sheppard was substituted with an injury in the 27th minute.

Former Oakleigh man Andreas Govas was the next to try his luck but his low drive from 20 yards out went wide.

With the hosts firmly on the back foot it seemed a matter of time before they would take the lead, with Kanakaris going close yet again but his back post effort was brilliantly denied by Saric in the 59th minute.

The visitors finally took the lead with just ten minutes to play though through substitute Andrew Cartanos.

Having only been on the field for a few minutes, the former South Melbourne midfielder found space inside the box to slot home past Saric giving his side a well-deserved lead.

Werribee then began to press forward, throwing men forward into the box in an effort to force an equalising goal but that pressure almost saw the hosts fall 2-0 down as substitute Kenny Athiu found himself clean through on goal in stoppage time but the former Box Hill striker was denied once again by Saric who stood tall in the one on one.

The result sees Heidelberg go equal top of the 2015 Victorian NPL table with six points out of a possible six.
