Youssef clinches late winner for Paco over Hume
A hotly contested match at CB Smith on Friday night has seen Pascoe Vale clinch the three points over Hume City with a late winner.
Joseph Youssef’s 85th minute strike proved pivotal in Pascoe Vale’s win.
Despite a great deal of attacking at the onset from both Paco and Hume, neither side was able to muster a clear goalscoring chance in the opening 15 minutes of the match.
The first real chance of the game was also the first goal, as Youssef found himself clean through on goal. and slipping the ball past Hume custodian Chris Oldfield and into the back of the net just on 17 minutes.
Celebrations were cut short however as the linesman’s flag cancelled out the goal and the score remained deadlocked.
Pascoe Vale continued to press and looked likely to open the scoring after its earlier offside goal.
After 34 minutes of play a delightful cross from Paco’s Davey Van t’ Schip found Lazarides’ darting run toward the front post, but his shot was wide of the mark.
The 41st minute saw the first of Hume’s two counter strikes; both coming through captain Nick Hegarty, who proved a handful for the opposition as he dribbled through the Paco defence and faced a one-on-one with Paco custodian Alex Pavlidis.
The latter came out on top with a terrific smother to maintain the deadlock.
Just five minutes later Hegarty was at it again as he sent a stinging volley just over the bar which rounded out a thoroughly entertaining half.
The second half saw a dearth of clear-cut goalscoring opportunities despite an end to end contest.
The fans had to wait more than half an hour to see their first taste of goalmouth action for the second half, coming in the form of Jai Ingham.
Ingham cut inside to create another one-on-one opportunity , but it was Pavlidis who proved his worth again, deflecting Ingham’s shot to safety.
Just as the points were looking more and more likely to be shared between the two sides, a Pascoe Vale corner on 85 minutes deflected into the path of Youssef who took the ball with his chest, and struck a volley which crashed off the underside of the bar and into the net, sparking elation from the players and fans alike.
Next round sees Paco face a stubborn Heidelberg outfit at home on Friday night, meanwhile Hume travel to Port Melbourne in an attempt to end a winless three game run.
