Knights pile on Bees' misery

By Daniel Campos (@francisfields)

Melbourne Knights compounded Werribee's relegation worries by beating the side 5-1 at Knights Stadium.

The Knights had five different goalscorers, with Stipo Andrijasevic, Ivan Grgic, Robbie Zadworny, Rodrigo Covarrubias and James McGarry getting on the scoresheet, while Dean Tomeski netted a scant consolation for the visitors.

Hosts Melbourne Knights began with confidence, but was unable to carve out any clear cut opportunities.

The flow of the match on 20 minutes slowed, but it brought dividends for the Knights as Andrijasevic unleashed a superb left-footed drive on 22 minutes to open the scoring.

Both sides began to settle and suddenly a corner swung in deep towards the far post fell loose, with Werribee's backline reacting second-best as Grgic quickly volleyed the ball just past the goal-line, the linesman awarding the goal from a matter of inches for two-nil.

Three minutes straight after the restart Robert Zadworny scored the Knights' third from the tightest of angles courtesy of a cross by Talajic.

Marian Cvitkovic came off for Covarrubias as a substitute with the youngster back fit from injury.

The impact was felt almost immediately with a shot sailing over Thomson and the crossbar.

Signs of frustraion began on the hour mark for Nino Ragusa's men as desperate balls from the backline came to no avail as captain Tomislav Uskok looked orderly and commanding.

On 72 minutes, Covarrubias got himself on the scoresheet for the Knights’ fourth of the afternoon and to the delight of the fans.

By taking his marker one-on-one and feigning to the right, the forward then took the ball onto his left foot for a clinical finish leaving Thomson hapless despite his efforts.

Dean Tomeski managed a consolation for Werribee when he got on the end of a one-two on the edge of the 18-yard box and opted for placement to beat Chris May in goal and get Werribee on the scoresheet.

In stoppage time, James McGarry chased a long ball from Andrijasevic to extend the lead to five by beating the offside trap.

Coach Andrew Marth reflected after the match: "I'm extremely happy, we probably could’ve scored seven goals, and if we want to be up there we’ve got to beat the best teams," Marth said.

"We are looking forward to the mid-week game against Bentleigh and obviously the big one against South Melbourne next weekend. We scored a lot of goals today; I think we need to improve our defensive structure, our back four needs to concentrate for 90 minutes.

"We will take this week a game at a time."
