Oldfield heroics block out Knights

By David Manuca

Hume City advanced to the semi-finals of the PS4 NPL Victoria finals following a 2-0 win on penalties against 10-man Melbourne Knights at Knights Stadium on Friday night.

The two sides could not be separated after 120 minutes of action with the game ending in a 2-2 draw.

Chris Oldfield was the hero for Hume, saving each and every one of Melbourne Knights four spot-kicks.

Knights got off to the perfect start after just ten minutes when Stipo Andrijasevic headed in from a corner to open the scoring.

It was a scrappy and cagey first-half but Hume should have gone into the half-time break level but Jai Ingham failed to connect to a perfect cross from Theo Markelis.

But it took only three minutes into the second period for Hume to get their equaliser. Marcus Schroen bundled the ball over the line from a corner and from then on it was all Hume.

Ingham was dangerous for the away side but spurned a few opportunities before finally putting one in the back of the net with twenty minutes to play.

With the time ticking down and Hume dominating the majority of the play they would not have expected Knights to equalise and send the game into extra-time.

Some great work down the right flank from Luke Jurcic presented the opportunity for MarijanCvitkovic to slot home the goal to make it 2-2.

However a second yellow card for Knights midfielder James McGarry saw the home side reduced to ten men.

Despite having the numerical advantage Hume failed to capitalise with both sides finding it difficult to create any threatening opportunities in extra-time.

Penalties was how the elimination final would be decided and some goalkeeping heroics from Oldfield saw Hume claim the win.

He saved penalties from Andrijasevic, Luis Covarrubias, Ivan Grgic and Jurcic with Ingham and Shane Rexhepi converting for Hume to send them through to the semi-finals.
