Gully bounces back with five over Thunder

By Agron Dauti

Green Gully is back on the winners list after a 5-2 defeat of Dandenong Thunder at George Andrews Reserve on Saturday night.

The clash was Gully’s third in seven days but the visitors showed no signs of fatigue, running rampant as five individual goal scorers piled the punishment on the young Thunder side.

The game began with Thunder controlling play but unable to cause damage in Gully’s defensive third. Green Gully looked dangerous on the counter attack and looked to have gone ahead in the 19th minute after Rodrigo Vargas turned in a Jem Berkant free-kick, but Vargas’ header was ruled offside.

The visitors opened the scoring in the 39th minute after former Thunder and Box Hill man Rinor Muriqi converted a penalty that blazed past Zaim Zeneli’s fingertips.

Gully looked to have come alive late in the half and things went from bad to worse for the home side when a Zaim Zeneli save spilled out to Omar Abdigafar who slotted the ball calmly into the net to make it 2-0 for Green Gully in the 41st minute.

Bob Stojcevski’s men came out of the break firing and scored their third of the night with Matthew Sanders capping off some brilliant build-up play to fire the ball into the bottom left corner and heap the pressure on the home side.

Dandenong ‘s persistence was rewarded, and the home side eventually pulled one back in the 63rd minute when Veton Korcari headed home from a Thunder corner to make it 3-1 and ignite hopes of a comeback.

But any hope the home side had didn’t last long; the visitors heaped the pressure back onto Thunder with Alon Blumgart receiving the ball from Muriqi and slotting the ball to the right of goal to make it 4-1 in the 66th minute.

Liam Scott made it 5-1 in stoppage time with a brilliant right-footed bomb from 30 yards out.

But Dandenong was determined to not go down embarrassed, with Faisal Sakhi Zada capitalising on a Abdirahman Ahmed pass and nabbed a late consolation goal just moments later, with the match ending 5-2 in Green Gully’s favour.
