MetroStars and Campbelltown City played out a 0-0 draw in Round 3 of the South Australia PlayStation4 National Premier League at TK Shutter Reserve on Saturday.

Michael D’Alosio was the closest to breaking the deadlock for the hosts, while Daniel Godley made a string of crucial second half interventions to deny the Red Devils. 

MetroStars coach Michael Pirone says his team can improve, but was happy with the point. 

“We played well in the first half and created a few chances, then started the second half ok. After that they had good opportunities and Dan Godley had a terrific game,” Pirone noted. 

“There are a few deficiencies to iron out, but that’s a consequence of starting pre-season late. We handled them well in the first half, but struggled for legs as the game opened up. I’m happy with the result rather than the performance, more so the second half. 

“We can learn to tighten up to not concede those opportunities on the break, but we are an attacking side and when you push players forward there is an element of risk attached.”  

Campbelltown assistant coach Joe Lagana lamented missed opportunities, but says they are pleased. 

“It was two good sides and both had chances. They had a decent chance in the first and we had opportunities after the break where we should have tied up the three points,” Lagana stated. 

“The performance was really good considering the warm conditions, plus being away from home against a good team. On a different day those shots go in, this time they didn’t. We are disappointed not to win, but away at MetroStars with a clean sheet we’ll take it. 

“Maybe it was a bit of luck that was missing in front of goal. I feel if one went in then another could have like it happened last Monday against Para Hills.” 

Michael Matricciani found space early on but as he closed in on Godley’s goal he failed to make sufficient contact with the ball. 

D’Alosio nearly netted against his former club as the interval loomed. The defender had to get down low to meet Perry Mitris’ free kick and his downward header bounced up and off the crossbar. 

Fabian Barbiero got on the end of Rocky Callisto’s cross, his near-post attempt saved down low by Ben Moore. 

Matricciani’s shot at the other end stung the palms of Godley. 

Campbelltown had the better of the second half opportunities, with ex-MetroStars striker Matricciani going through on goal but failing to get the better of Godley. 

The goalkeeper was winning the duel as he denied the No 15 once again from what was a similar position. 

With five minutes remaining it was the turn of substitute Valentino Yuel to test Godley. Matricciani threaded a pass through to the winger, but the goalkeeper was equal to the task at the near post, ensuring a point apiece.
