R6 Wrap: Croydon Kings v Campbelltown City

Campbelltown moved into outright third with an important 1-0 away victory over defending champions Croydon Kings in Round 6 of the PlayStation 4 National Premier League South Australia.

The game started positively for Campbelltown as they enjoyed good amount of possession and looked dangerous from set pieces. In the 23rd minute, Michael Matricciani broke the deadlock by scoring with a sublime effort from outside the box. With a delicate first touch, Matricciani came in from the right to blast the ball into the back of the net.

Both sides had good chances and after half time Croydon pressed for an equaliser. Campbelltown hit well on the counter but neither side could find a goal as the match finished up Campbelltown winning 1-0.

After scoring the game’s only goal, Michael Matricciani spoke about where his side sits at the moment.

“I would say it was a very good performance from us, we’ve definitely been working on our defensive structures and the way we want to play so we are improving on that. I wouldn’t say we’re close where we want to get to which is an exciting thing for us.”

“We’re very excited with the group of players we have, we have a very good coaching staff and we’re really looking forward to this season and continuing the momentum we have.”

When asked how his side keeps the momentum they have, Matricciani said it was just about keeping it simple.

“We take every game as it comes, we’re confident in ourselves and every week in the training track we keep trying to work on our deficiencies and keep working on the things we’re good at and hopefully we keep improving as a team.”

After suffering their first loss of the season, Croydon’s Michael Doyle gave his thoughts on the challenges facing his side.

“Obviously we were disappointed, we conceded a goal pretty early in the game and then I thought we did well to get ourselves back in the game but obviously it wasn’t good enough against a strong Campbelltown side.”

“I think we need to be a bit hungrier, maybe a bit more ruthless in the final third to punish teams when we get chances and obviously defensively we need to get a bit stronger as well.”

Despite the setback, Doyle remains confident his club can pick themselves up.

“We were obviously disappointed with the result but I thought we did enough to get a result out of it so we just go to keep doing what we doing and improve on it and stick to the instructions that Brazza gives.”

Round 7 sees Croydon play West Torrens Birkalla and Campbelltown play Adelaide Comets on Saturday March 21.
