R5 Wrap: Adelaide Comets v Adelaide Olympic

Two late goals sealed a 3-1 victory for Adelaide Comets over Adelaide Olympic in Round 5 of the PlayStation 4 National Premier League South Australia at SA Athletics Stadium on Saturday.

Apostolos Stamatelopoulos gave Comets a half-time advantage, but the visitors deservedly grabbed an equalising goal through Manni Katopodis 10 minutes from time. Andreas Wiens landed a sucker-punch in the 89th minute and Yiannis Nestoras made sure of the points in injury time.

Comets sit top of the pile with 13 points and assistant coach Elias Demourtzidis says the team got the victory without playing too well.

“We made it hard for ourselves. They came at us in the second half, were pushing, winning the midfield and got the goal. Then we got the two right at the end,” he said.

“There’s not too much to take from it, except to say we didn’t play well, but got the points. And also that the guys off the bench did their job.

“We knew Olympic would be hungry, we were wary of that. We thought if we could play our game we could win, the fact is we didn’t and that made it hard.”

Olympic remain winless after five matches and coach Maurice Natale was dejected as his side battled back to equalise, only to then lose.

“Our boys played quite well. Unfortunately we were unable to capitalise on the chances. We should have been ahead and then played out the final minutes,” he said.

“The boys were devastated. However, you can’t make those mistakes we did. We were punished for that.

“The spirit and effort was great. There was not much wrong with what we did, but those individual errors cost us.

“I believe if we keep working hard and playing well, we will turn the corner.”

The home side started brightly as captain Evan Kostopoulos burst past his marker only to shoot into the side netting in just the fifth minute.

It took until the 35th minute for Comets to hit the front. Wiens controlled the ball and found Stamatelopoulos, who fired a shot past Gino De Lucia in the Olympic goal.

The visitors started the season half brightly and should have equalised after a glorious double chance went begging. George Aslanidis crossed for the onrushing Sean Brennan to head on to the bar, with Oliver Totani putting the rebound wide of the target.

Davide Zerillo spurned the opportunity to bury the match at the other end, lifting his attempt over the top of De Lucia’s goal when all alone.

Brennan was causing Comets problems and cracked a shot from distance which goalkeeper John Solari did well to save.

Natale’s side did get the equaliser from the resulting corner. Katopodis prodded home at the second attempt from close range, with Solari already committed.

Olympic had the momentum and pushed for a winner, but Wiens was on hand to tap in past De Lucia in the 89th minute when the ball deflected into his path.

Comets sealed victory as Nestoras slotted home with only the goalkeeper to beat when all alone at the back post in the second minute of time added on.
