R6 Wrap: Raiders v Adelaide Comets

In what could very likely be the upset of the season, bottom side Raiders recorded their first win to snap the undefeated streak of Adelaide Comets in Raound 6 of the PlayStation 4 National Premier League South Australia.

Raiders came from behind twice to secure all three points in a thrilling 3-2 contest, which sent the faithful supporters at the Croatian Sports Centre into hysterics at the final whistle.

Alex Cosmidis put in a Man of the Match performance with a brace and an assist, with teammate Mario Marcinko not far behind him in the polling by adding the other goal and being a constant pest to the Comets back four.

Alan Welsh and Evan Kostopolous bagged the goals for the away side.

Raiders’ Justin Bralic made sure to commend the fans who have supported the club despite the poor run of results.

“They’ve obviously been frustrated but they have been very supportive at the same time.

“They are the loudest supporters in the league and have been very quiet up until this point but the result definitely let the shackles off, especially when we scored that second goal, something just changed in the air.”

Bralic’s connection to the Gepps Cross club runs deep, and Saturday’s result felt like he was giving back to the people that have continuously shown him support.

“They really feel like my supporters and (Saturday) was a really proud moment for me.

“I had tears in my eyes, even just setting that second goal up was so emotional.

“It was just a really good moment after the final whistle and a really good feeling.”

Comets’ Theo Balomenos said simple mistakes let the side down.

“There were a lot of careless mistakes made on Saturday, I think the boys were playing too fast and rushing everything in the later stages of the game.

“We just needed a little composure to slow the game down, tire them out and maintain the ball when we were 2-1 up.

“I think sometimes players need to trust each other a little more on the ball so that we can play out from the back rather than playing a long ball which makes for a 50/50 contest.”

Balomenos said the loss was disappointing.

“To be honest, there aren’t any positives we can take away from the game.

“A win was essential in order to extend our lead on the top but now we’ve gifted our opposition the opportunity to close the gap.”

Comets started out as the dominant side early on with Christopher Pepe rattling the woodwork inside the first few minutes of the game with a sweetly struck half-volley, the rebound could only be put out for a corner.

This would prove to be a signal of intent from the visitors, as Welsh put Comets in front with a header from the resultant corner.

El Qioin El Wali looked the most likely avenue on goal for Comets as he continuously got on the ball and dazzled the crowd with a few moments of magic, but he was let down by his teammates in front of goal.

Raiders had a change in mentality midway through the first 45 which would spark the game into life, as an increase in pressure forced Comets to make some schoolboy errors in dangerous positions.

The equalizer came as a result of this as Marcinko refused to give an inch to the Comets centre back pairing, halting them from playing out from the back.

The striker forced a turnover as he intercepted a sideways pass, and would go on to find Cosmidis at the back post with a teasing delivery low across the box.

Comets would head into the break with the advantage, as Kostopolous would convert from the penalty spot.

The second period was all Raiders, as they continued where they left off at the end of the first half.

A change in personnel saw Bralic take to the field, which would prove to be decisive as he linked up nicely with Cosmidis and would provide him with the assist which would even the scores up at 2 apiece.

Marcinko would be rewarded for his tireless display up front by bagging the winner, Cosmidis returning the favour from the Raiders opener by providing the assist.
