Tuggies' Stewart plays for 'The Love of the Game

By Brendan Hawes

Tuggeranong United went through an absolute rollercoaster of a season in 2013. Finishing bottom of the premier league table, yet victorious in the Federation Cup, holding on in a tight contest against Cooma Tigers. They were successful in their appeal to play in the inaugural FFA Cup and will be Canberra’s only inclusion in the competition. The boys from the valley have much to prove in 2014, yet with captain and central midfielder Tim Stewart at the helm Tuggeranong surely are sailing into calmer waters.

Solid preparation and pre-season has Tim feeling confident of Tuggeranong’s hopes for 2014. Though they haven’t discussed specific goals or achievements as a squad, it is clear cut from the captain that attaining a top four finish in order to make the finals in the Premier League is a high priority. It is the consistency of the top teams that separate those who play finals and those who miss out, making the Canberra NPL a very close competition. Though disappointing at times in the league last season, Tim is adamant that “we can beat anyone on our given day” as proven by the federation cup victory. With new coach Steve Forshaw bringing across fresh tactical ideas and players, the side has been given a lift, that will hopefully see them perform to their best in all three of their competitions.

Tim described Tuggeranong’s inclusion in the FFA cup with one word, “awesome.” Noting that the possibility of getting an A-League team in the draw would be “amazing.” The captain, originally from Sydney, says that he and the lads want to represent both the club and Canberra as best they can. However he also made certain that the Premier League is first priority. Securing a victory, or at the least a finals run in the NPL will really show who the best team is.

The natural born leader played all his junior football up in Sydney, playing in NSL youth league teams, and on into the Sydney Super League. He has always been a central midfielder ever since he was a child. Tim simply “loves getting on the ball all the time.” With red hair and playing a similar position, it was only natural that Tim would develop a likeness to the legendary Paul Scholes. Known colloquially as ‘Scholsey’ among Canberra football. Having played the last five seasons for Tuggeranong United since he moved from Sydney, Tim loves the club and culture within it. A “bunch of good guys, good fun. What football is all about.” An avid lover of football, playing, watching, thinking, his time on the park is not done until either he can no longer run, or the wife says enough. Either way, Tim’s involvement will not stop there, with aspirations of coaching in the future.

With much to come in 2014, Tuggeranong United are in good stead with the likes of Tim ‘Scholsey’ Stewart. As a leader, player and individual. He offers his all to the team, simply for the love of the game.
