Yellow Submarine Surfaces at Gungahlin

The first game of National Premier League: Capital Football on Gungahlin's new $12.5 million ground will be played at 3pm on Sunday, April 6.

Canberra City Football Cub, one of Canberra's long-established and most famous teams, will be playing against the Monaro Panthers in round one of the National Premier League: Capital Football. City have moved to the new enclosed oval as their home ground for the 2014 season.

The game this weekend between City (nicknamed the Yellow Submarine in honour of their all yellow kit) and the Queanbeyan side will mark another step in the creation of Gungahlin's sports precinct. The newly-completed ground stands next to the Gungahlin Aquatic Centre which is due to be opened next month.

The Gungahlin Enclosed oval has undercover grandstand seating for 580 spectators and open air seating for an another 850 people.

The President of Canberra City, Geoff Perry, said the match will be "a great moment for City, for Capital Football and for the development of top-level sport in Gungahlin. The grass surface looks great so we reckon it'll be a wonderful ground for the Yellow Submarine to surface on - up periscope for a great future in Gungahlin!"

The coach of City, Nick Palagyi, said playing at the new ground in Gungahlin, "is a fantastic way to open the season. The club has done a lot of work in the off season in relation to improved exposure for our sponsors and ensuring effective development opportunities and on-field recognition is genuinely available to all of our players. The move to our new home ground in time for Round 1 is the icing on the cake. The club is continuing to move in the right direction and the future looks bright.”
