Wells Double Seals Blue Devils Win

Round 1
Friday 4th April
Belconnen United 3 (Jason Ugrinic 64’, Dustin Wells 77’, 88’) Tuggeranong United 1 (Jon Toole 58’)
A late double from Dustin Wells gave Belconnen United a winning start to their National Premier Leagues: Capital Football campaign with a 3-1 win over Tuggeranong United at Hawker Football Centre. Wells struck in the 77th and 88th minutes to finally shake off a persistent Tuggeranong who fought throughout and look to be a solid unit. In an even opening half it was the Blue Devils that went closest to scoring the first goal of the season creating the best chances and almost taking the lead with a splendid strike. Michael Taurasi did everything right in the 18th minute when, from the angle of the top of the penalty box, he cut inside and set his sights with a blistering drive that had Tuggeranong goalkeeper Rowan Shepherd clutching at thin air as it cannoned back off the inside of the post. Shortly after Shepherd denied Goran Mukevski in more conventional circumstances, blocking his goal-bound shot to preserve the stalemate at the break. Tuggeranong stunned Belconnen by taking the lead early in the second half, Sean Kiddey initiating a lightning fast counter with some exquisite skill to release Zach Munster who set up Jon Toole for the killer finish. The Blue Devils response was excellent as Jason Ugrinic equalised, tapping in at the far post, to round off a neat move that exposed Tuggeranong’s square back four. That left the match neatly poised until Wells, usually the man for the big occasion, stepped up with his match-winning brace.
