Toole Downs City with Classy Winner

National Premier Leagues: Capital Football
Round 2

Tuesday 15th April
Tuggeranong United 1 (Jon Toole 81’) Canberra City 0
A piece of magic from midfielder Jon Toole proved the difference as Tuggeranong United edged past Canberra City at Hawker Football centre on a cool Tuesday evening. Toole struck with nine minutes to play to settle the contest that had, up until that point, been an evenly balanced match with goal-scoring opportunities limited. And whilst the crowd had to wait for the decisive moment, it proved worth it as the winning goal was sublime. Cameron Doherty created it with a run adjacent to the top of the penalty area teeing up Toole who still had plenty to do. The midfielder took aim and, with the outside of his boot, sent a swerving, dipping drive with minimum back lift, swooping high over the head of City stopper James Ward, caressing the underside of the bar on its way into the net. Prior to that moment of magic both teams had their chances with Tuggeranong wasting a glorious opportunity to take the lead in the first half, Tim Stewart burst through a static City back-line and unselfishly squared for Muad Zwed who inexplicably managed to send his shot against the bar from eight metres with Ward stranded. The follow-up was hastily cleared. For their part City looked lively out wide with Jeremy Hegarty a constant source of threat, but the lack of a cutting edge in the final third was to prove costly. However, the match seemed destined for a draw until Toole struck with time running out.
