Canberra FC march on with six of the best

National Premier Leagues: Capital Football
Round 5 – REVIEW

Sunday 11th May
Canberra FC 6 (Aaron Evans 3’, Alex Oloriegbe 11’, Daniel Bennett 28’, 41’, 73’, 93’) FFA COE 1 (Kosta Petratos 16’)
Daniel Bennett continued his remarkable start to the 2014 National Premier Leagues: Capital Football season by claiming another four goals as Canberra FC defeated the FFA Centre of Excellence 6-1 at Deakin Stadium. Bennett now has ten goals in only four matches in what has proved to be a blistering start to the season for the young flier. Canberra FC took the lead in the match in only the third minute as Aaron Evans netted an early goal and he was followed onto the score-sheet by the skilful Alex Oloriegbe just eight minutes later. The FFA COE hit back in the 16th minute as Kosta Petratos reduced the deficit but that was just a precursor to an extraordinary display from Bennett. The winger/forward started his personal haul in the 28th minute and had his second before the break as Canberra FC moved 4-1 ahead. The scoring abated a little in the second half but Bennett was on hand to complete his hat-trick in the 73rd minute and, as time was running out, he showcased his growing confidence with his fourth of the match in stoppage time. It was far from a one man show with FC showing across the park that they have the skills and quality that justifiably makes them championship favourites. And with 24 goals in four matches, they are in rare form.

Belconnen United reiterated their title challenge with a stunning 7-1 demolition of Canberra City at Gungahlin Enclosed. The Blue Devils were in stunning form in front of goal as City struggled to cope with the pace and movement of their on-song opponents. The game was as good as done by half-time as Belconnen led 3-0 after dominating the opening exchanges. Michael Taurasi got the visitors off to a flier by scoring in the 17th minute and the striker doubled his and his team’s tally, in the 35th minute. A third goal, netted by the mercurial Dustin Wells on the cusp of the half-time whistle had Dean Ugrinic’s team in total command. They didn’t let up after the interval either with Wells netting his second with twenty minutes remaining. This opened up the floodgates a little as City visibly wilted and Jason Ugrinic took advantage to score his second goal of the season. Goran Mukevski made it 6-0 with five minutes still to play, enough time for Wells to complete his treble in stoppage time. Bizarrely City scored their consolation straight from the kick-off as Gimale Essacu waltzed through the Belconnen defence unchallenged before sliding a pass square to Misko Naumoski who stroked into the empty net.

Cooma Tigers 4 (Robbie Cattanach 9’, 23’, 45’, 78’) Tuggeranong United 0
Four goals from Robbie Cattanach proved the difference at Nijong Oval as Cooma Tigers romped to a 4-0 win over Tuggeranong United on a warm day in the mountains. The Tigers talisman was in an almost unstoppable mode as he took advantage of some slack play in the Tuggeranong defence to show just why he is regarded as one of the best players in the region. Cattanach started his goal-blitz in the ninth minute with a low free-kick that wrong-footed Rowan Shepherd in the United goal and he was on target again in the 23rd minute, guiding a half-volley beyond the reach of Shepherd after a neat chested lay-off from Stephen Domenici. Lianel Lauper and Iain Elliott were causing issues out wide and it was from the former’s pass that Cattanach crashed home his hat-trick goal on the stroke of half-time. United emerged from the changing rooms in a much more organised fashion and Adam Casey and Matt Menser both went close. It was the home team that looked the more dangerous in the final third and they secured the points twelve minutes from time. Awarded an indirect free-kick on the edge of the six yard box Cattanach did the rest, rifling into the top corner for his fourth of the game, and fifth of the season, to round out a quite brilliant individual performance.

Canberra Olympic 0 Woden Valley 2 (Lukas Cole 15’ (pen), 30’)
A brace of goals from ex-Canberra Olympic forward Lukas Cole ensured that Woden Valley picked up their first win of the season with a 2-0 win at O’Connor Enclosed. Cole looked in superb form against his ex-employers and, determined to prove a point, led the line with pace and power causing all manner of problems for the Olympic defence. The visitors took the lead in the fifteenth minute from the spot. Given a penalty for an infringement in the area Cole took responsibility and rammed home the dead-ball to give his team the perfect start. With Olympic pressing for an equaliser Woden hit them once again. Cole was on the end of the move and bludgeoned his second of the afternoon on the half-hour. Olympic was left chasing the match but with Conor Nolan restricting the space afforded Mark Shields frustration began to grow. Woden did come under some expected pressure in the second stanza but with Domenic Smedley in top form their attacks petered out upon the solid defensive line issued by Mitch Stevens. The Woden coach had an interesting day himself, removed from the touchline after the officials took exception to comments made following a yellow card issued to one of his players. But it mattered little as Woden comfortably held on to claim the three points.
