Canberra Olympic lead the pack in U20 & U18

PREMIER LEAGUE UNDER-20
Belconnen United went to the top of the National Premier Leagues: Capital Football under-20 league ladder ahead of three fixtures on Sunday afternoon when they continued Canberra FC’s miserable start to the season with a convincing 4-1 victory at McKellar Park on Saturday. The Blue Devils were simply too strong and powerful for FC who struggled to cope with the physicality of their hosts shipping a brace of goals before the interval and facing an uphill task from there. Aisosa Ihegie gave Belconnen an early lead which was added to by a magical second from Kieran Mattress, the forward collecting a high pass and cutting inside two defenders to drill a shot into the bottom corner. Bernard Rene eclipsed that effort with a stunning third from distance in the second half before Mattress, rather luckily it must be said, clipped in a fourth that appeared to be an attempted cross. Nikola Barisic pulled one back for Canberra FC late on. Canberra Olympic reclaimed top spot on Sunday afternoon as a goal from Alexander Efkarpidis proved enough to defeat Senior NTC at the Australian Institute of Sport. Efkarpidis’ goal puts Olympic two points ahead at the top of the table with a perfect record of five wins from five matches. Meanwhile, at Kambah 2, Tuggeranong United claimed a second win in six starts with a narrow 2-1 win over Monaro Panthers in an excellent match. The Panthers’ Pepe Varga struck for the visitors but it was goals from Jacob Ayuel and Tomas Ruiz that proved the difference for Tuggeranong who moved above their opponents into fourth place. Earlier in the week goals from Michael Sellers and Varga gave Monaro Panthers a 2-1 win over Canberra City in their rearranged Round 1 fixture at Gungahlin Enclosed. Deng Aleer Deng netted a fourth of the season for the home team but it wasn’t enough to foil Monaro, with the Panthers claiming a second win of the campaign. Goals from Jared Tonini and Rishabh Sharma meanwhile gave Cooma Tigers a 2-0 win over Woden Valley.

*1 goal for Cooma Tigers

PREMIER LEAGUE UNDER-18
Belconnen United inflicted a first defeat of the season on Canberra FC with a thrilling 4-3 victory at McKellar Park on Saturday afternoon, taking over as table-toppers from their vanquished opponents ahead of the Sunday fixtures in the process. In a ding-dong battle that was worthy of its top-of-the-table status it was the Blue Devils who finally emerged victorious, breaching the previously impregnable FC back-line four times through well-taken strikes from Dean Ratsch, Marin Ugrinic, Sam Whithear and Ahmed Ugool to delight the home supporters. Canberra FC fought to the very end and were a constant goal threat netting a trio of chances as Alex Lazarov, Kye Edwards and Michael Pochi all scored, but in the end they fell just short. As with their Premier League under-20 squad, Canberra Olympic’s under-18 team also reclaimed first place on the ladder as they proved too good for ACTAS at the Australian Institute of Sport with a 3-0 victory. A fifth goal of the season for Andrew Georgiou was added to by a fourth of the year from Max Mottl and a rare strike from Ben Basser-Silk. ACTAS battled hard for the majority of the game but Olympic, who now have four wins from five games, proved too good in the end. A four-goal haul from Michael Kita was the highlight for Cooma Tigers as they romped to a 6-0 hiding of Woden Valley at Kaleen Enclosed. Kita was in red hot form in front of goal to join a five-way chase for the golden boot, moving onto five for the campaign. Simon Noveski also has five goals for the year having netted in this one and Friday Karbehl completed a comfortable day’s work for the rampant Tigers. At Kambah 2, Edward Coggan claimed a hat-trick in Tuggeranong United’s 4-1 win over Monaro Panthers. Coggan’s treble was added to by a goal from Ryan Cawley with the Panthers’ prolific Dylan Shanley also finding the target. It was United’s second victory of the season, following on from a previous 1-0 win over Canberra City, and a thoroughly deserved one from an excellent performance.
