Belconnen United roll over Woden-Weston FC to go top

Belconnen United 6 (Jordan Buchanan 3’, Karen Clarke 19’, Maddy Whittall 26’, 84’, Chloe Callaghan 31’, Jessie Williams 62’)def. Woden-Weston FC 0

A four-goal first half set the early tone for Belconnen United to record a 6-0 win over Woden-Weston FC on Sunday.

Before the home side could properly settle, Belconnen were infront as Jordan Buchanan stabbed home from inside the box after the Woden-Weston defence failed to clear a corner.

The visitors continued to force the issue as Woden-Weston were pinned back inside their own half, and struggled to break forward in attack even on the counter. Sarah Crittenden had arguably the best chance for the home side in the 17th minute, but she blazed well over the bar as the ball was squared to her at the top of the box.

United extended their advantage two minutes later as Karen Clarke headed home strongly from a corner as they took control of the match. Maddy Whittall increased the lead to three just seven minutes later as she finished some great link-up play. Jessie Williams broke down the left wing past her defender into the corner before squaring inside to Chloe Callaghan, and she found Whittall in the middle who was able to tuck home past Kathryn Ibbotson in goal.

Callaghan got in on the act herself after 31 minutes as she volleyed home from a corner kick, and gave Belconnen a 4-0 lead. Woden-Weston hit further trouble as the half wore on with Lotta Raap going down injured, and she was replaced by Laura Vandenbroucke just before the half

The second half began in much the same fashion, and Williams looked to put United further ahead as she audaciously tried to chip Ibbotson but the goalkeeper did well to get back and cover.

Ibbotson was again in the thick of it soon after as she saved well from a United free kick, but was beaten by Williams soon after as the forward got on the end of a good cross to find the back of the net.

Both sides appeared to tire as the game wore on but Whittall completed her brace with six minutes to go as she finished well, before the visitors were awarded a penalty as Michaela Day was brought down inside the box.

Ibbotson saved from the spot-kick though and cleaned up the rebound as well, to ensure the score line remained as it was.
