PS4 NPL Women's Round 12 Wrap

Tuggeranong United 2 (Jamie Berkeley, Meg McLaughlin) def. by Gungahlin United (Brittany Palombi 29’, Ashleigh Palombi 55’, Ilahna Aitchison 83’)

Gungahlin United remain tied for second place on the ladder after a narrow win over Tuggeranong United on Sunday.

Brittany Palombi opened the scoring after 29 minutes for the visitors in an entertaining opening half hour, as both sides looked to push each other. Gungahlin retained the advantage at half-time, but Ashleigh Palombi doubled that for them just five minutes into the second half as they looked to seal the match.

But Tuggeranong would not lie down and looked to get themselves back into the match, and did so with just under 20 minutes remaining. Jamie Berkeley scored for the hosts to get them on the board as they chased the game, however Ilahna Aitchison all but sealed the match with seven minutes to go as she tucked home a free-kick to extend the lead to 3-1.

Meg McLaughlin scored in the final moments to halve the deficit but it was a case of too little, too late for Tuggies as they slipped to their fourth loss in a row in the league.

Canberra Olympic 0 def. by Belconnen United 2 (Chloe Callaghan 17’, Michaela Day 30’)

Canberra Olympic put in yet another strong performance at home on Sunday but it was not enough as ladder-leaders Belconnen left with a 2-0 win to maintain their gap at the top of the league.

Olympic looked to push from the outset as the visitors unusually sat back and looked to hit on the counter, but Rob Scott’s side were unable to break through the United defence.

But Belconnen hit the lead after 17 minutes as Chloe Callaghan continued her imperious goalscoring form, finishing off a good move to put her side ahead.

As the game wore on Belconnen began to control more of the play, and Olympic tried to close them down on a bumpy pitch. United doubled their advantage on the half hour mark through Michaela Day and then dropped back to defend their lead.

The second half was much of the same as United pushed higher, pressuring Olympic on the break as they forced the home side off the attack. Olympic pushed late as they had chances in stoppage time, but were unable to turn their pressure into a goal.

The result leaves Olympic winless on the season, while United retain their nine-point lead at the top.

Woden-Weston FC 2 (Rachel Crittenden 36’, 45’) drew. Canberra FC 2 (Grace Gill 25’, Chantel Jones 82’)

A late strike from Chantel Jones rescued a point for Canberra FC at Woden Park on Sunday, as the battle for fourth place with Woden-Weston got tighter with a 2-2 draw.

Canberra United Academy 3 (Jasmine Genovesi 30’, Gemma Murphy 60’, 75’) def. Monaro Panthers 2 (Alicia Meuronen (2))

The Canberra United Academy came from behind on Sunday to defeat Monaro in a see-sawing encounter at Hawker.

Monaro were looking for a result different to the 7-2 loss they suffered at the hands of the Academy the last time they played, and got off to the right start as Alicia Meuronen scored to give her side the lead.

The Panthers continued to hold their own as the Academy looked to get back into the match, and they did on the half hour mark as Jasmine Genovesi scored to level the score at 1-1. But Angelo Maralit’s side stuck around, and Meuronen was on the board again before the half was up as she gave Monaro a deserved lead heading into the half-time break.

The Academy came out of the break as the stronger side however, and began to chase down the lead, drawing level as Gemma Murphy grabbed her first goal on the hour mark through a good bit of play.

And 15 minutes later Murphy grabbed her second, finishing neatly to give the Academy back the lead and condemn Monaro to defeat. The result is better for a constantly improving Monaro side, and they will host Gungahlin United at the Riverside Stadium next Saturday.
