Tuggies keep the finals flame alive with Saturday night win

Tuggeranong United 4 (Fernando Jorquera 21’, 48’, Cam Doherty 52’, Aisosa Ihegie 66’) def. Woden-Weston 1 (Dean Tomeski 44’)

Tuggeranong United picked up a crucial three points to keep their finals hopes alive with a 4-1 win over Woden-Weston at Greenway on Saturday night.

A cagey opening on a cold night saw neither side press too far forward, however the hosts began to take control of the match and assert themselves as the quarter-hour mark approached. And it was a seemingly distant set piece that gave them the lead, as Chilean forward Fernando Jorquera put an absolute rocket past the wall and into the back of the net from all of 30 metres after 21 minutes of play.

United continued to press the visitors looking to double their advantage, but were unable to make their final ball count as they were turned away a number of times by the defence.

It cost them just before half-time as the visitors struck back; Dean Tomeski tapping home from close range after an earlier header struck the woodwork from a good cross.

Level at the break, it only took for minutes into the second half for Tuggies to regain the lead. Alex Oloriegbe burst through the defence and was brought down by a late tackle inside the box, and the referee pointed to the spot immediately.

Jorquera calmly stepped up to convert the spot kick and complete his brace, and leave Tuggeranong in control of the match. And it only took a further four minutes for them to double the advantage as Cameron Doherty’s header crept across the line and was flagged a goal.

The match began to heat up as tensions flared, but it remained under control as the hosts cruised on. Aisosa Ihegie scored the final goal of the match with 23 minutes to play as he got on the end of Oloriegbe’s cross to tuck home and seal the match for the hosts.

It leaves Tuggeranong in the fourth eligible finals spot ahead of a big match against Canberra Olympic on Sunday while Woden-Weston look to get back on track against Monaro.
