PS4 NPL Women's Round 21 Wrap

Belconnen United 7 (Chloe Callaghan 10’, 65’, Maddy Whittall 28’, 77’, Jasmine Maguire 41’, Katie Woodman 49’, Karen Clarke 64’) def. Canberra United Academy 0

Belconnen United capped off a stellar regular season with another big win over the Canberra United Academy at McKellar Park on Saturday evening.

United flew out of the blocks at home and after some early pressure, speedster Chloe Callaghan finished off a good chance ten minutes in to put the Premiers on the back foot. The young Academy side fought back to stifle the initial pressure though, but could only hold out for so long and in the 28th minute leading goal scorer Maddy Whittall picked up her first goal of the evening with a well taken finish. 13 minutes later Jasmine Maguire extended the lead and United went into the break three goals to the good.

It took the hosts only four minutes into the second half to further stretch the advantage as Katie Woodman put the final touches on a lovely team move, before two goals in two minutes to Karen Clarke and and Callaghan pushed the result beyond doubt. Whittall was not to be out done though, and landed the final blow with 13 minutes left to ensure that United head into the finals period with a full head of steam and momentum.

Tuggeranong United 6 (Meg McLaughlin 2’, 64’, 72’, 79’, Adriana Ilheo 38’, Emily Jensen 51’) def. Monaro Panthers 1 (Trinick 68’)

Tuggeranong United finished their season strong with a convincing 6-1 win over struggling Monaro Panthers on Sunday afternoon at Kambah.

Meg McLaughlin continued her blistering end to the season as she opened the scoring after just two minutes of play to give her side the lead. Monaro fought back after going behind initially and held their own in play, but surrendered a goal just seven minutes before the break to Adriana Ilheo which set them back in their task.

Tuggies came out strong with the weight of possession in the second half too, and it took them only six minutes to extend their lead to three goals as Emily Jensen fired home. McLaughlin completed her brace 13 minutes later as she calmly finished a nice move, but Monaro cut the deficit four minutes later through Caitlin Trinick’s effort.

That was to be a short-lived moment of hope though, as McLaughlin added two more goals in the ensuing 11 minutes to round out an emphatic finish to the season for Tuggies.

Canberra Olympic 0 def. by Woden-Weston 7 (Jade Bernet 42’, Laura Vandenbroucke 52’, 60’, Cassia McGlashan 55’, Nat Lacey 63’, Rachel Crittenden 89’, OG)

Woden-Weston picked up a big win to gather momentum heading into finals as they knocked off Canberra Olympic 7-0 in the final round.

Despite being the favourite heading into the match the Wanderers struggled to get going initially, as both sides traded chances early. However just three minutes before the break Jade Bernet struck to give her side the lead, and a little inkling of what was to come after the break.

It took just seven minutes for Wanderers to extend their lead as Laura Vandenbroucke struck home her first, before Cassia McGlashan stretched the lead three minutes later. Vandenbroucke completed her brace with 30 minutes to go and an Olympic own goal added more woe to the score board as the lead broke out to five goals.

But Woden-Weston continued to pour on the pressure as time ran down, and with 27 minutes to go goalkeeper Nat Lacey scored as she finished off McGlashan’s cross from the right. Rachel Crittenden added a final goal with a minute left in regulation to round out a big Wanderers win and set them up for a tilt at Canberra FC next Saturday.

Gungahlin United 2 (Grace Field 69', Darby Whiteley 70') drew. Canberra FC 2 (Hayley McLachlan 24', Marcia Wallis 51')

Two goals in two second half minutes rescued a point for Gungahlin United and helped them retain second spot against Canberra FC on Sunday.
