Quickfire double keeps United in second spot

Gungahlin United 2 (Grace Field 69', Darby Whiteley 70') drew. Canberra FC 2 (Hayley McLachlan 24', Marcia Wallis 51')

Two goals in two second half minutes has earned Gungahlin United a 2-2 draw with Canberra FC and booked them a spot in next weekend’s PS4 NPL Women’s major semi-final.

The early stages of the game were tough, as both sides jostled for possession in the rain and snow, but Canberra FC were quick to take charge, creating a number of good chances in the opening stages.

As Canberra FC pressed forward, Gungahlin looked to find space in behind their opponents on the counter attack, but Mark Risteski’s side looked determined to pinch second place from Diego Iglesias’ and his charges.

Canberra FC were rewarded for their early dominance in the 24th minute, finding a goal through Hayley McLachlan, who took the ball on a surging run through the middle and finished into the bottom left from the top of the box.

Canberra FC came into the second half with intensity, while Gungahlin continued to look flat, and the visitors extended their lead just six minutes in, as Marcia Wallis picked up the ball out wide and put a well-weighted chip over Eleni Haridemos in goals.

Just as started to look like Canberra FC would comfortably see out the game, Gungahlin pulled a goal back in the 69th minute through Grace Field, who popped up in the box from a free kick and flicked home from close range.

Less than a minute later, Iglesias’ side levelled the game through a quick fire counter attack, with Whiteley picking up the ball out wide and running it into the box to finish into the bottom left corner.

Canberra FC resumed their attacking pressure late into the game, but a winner eluded Risteski’s side after a number late chances from Jones were put agonisingly wide.

Gungahlin held on to the draw, claiming 2nd place and putting them into the major semi-final against Belconnen United, while Canberra FC will now face Woden Weston FC in a do-or-die semi-final, as we reach finals action next weekend.
