NPLW Round 2 Wrap

Monaro Panthers 0 def. by Belconnen United 5 (Maddy Whittall 29’, 37’, Jessie Williams 31’, 63’, Michaela Day 90+1’)

A dominant display from Belconnen United pushed them three points clear at the top of the National Premier Leagues Women’s table as they brushed aside Monaro Panthers 5-0.

United took control from the outset but were unable to convert chances early, before three goals within a ten minute span broke the game open entirely.

A good team move just before the half hour mark saw Jessie Williams cut back for Maddy Whittall, and the 2017 Golden Boot winner made no mistake as she finished cleanly. Whittall turned provider for the second just two minutes later as she reversed the first goal, cutting the ball back for Williams to grab her first goal.

And it was Whittall’s turn again shortly after, reacting first to the loose ball after Ellie Raymond lashed a header against the crossbar from close range and putting into the back of the net to push the lead to three goals at half-time.

Panthers struggled to get their dangerous players involved in the match and last years Grand Finalists continued to dictate the pace of play in the second half.

Williams grabbed her second just under 20 minutes into the second half when she scored from the penalty spot, and the game was left for Michaela Day to seal in stoppage time for the second win in a row. Day was played in by Bronte Pyke at the top of the box and a tidy finish into the side netting rounded out the scoreline at 5-0.

Tuggeranong United FC 1 (Adriana Ilheo 19’) def. by Canberra United Academy 3 (Stephanie Coates OG 25’, Karly Roestbakken 49’, Hayley Taylor-Young 60’)

The Canberra United Academy overcame an early deficit to see off Tuggeranong United 3-1 in their Round Two encounter at Hawker Synthetic.

Gungahlin United 0 def. by Canberra FC (Christina Graver-Kompos)

A late goal from Christina Graver-Kompos has given Canberra FC their first win of the season as they edged out Gungahlin 1-0 at Nicholls Synthetic on Sunday afternoon.

Both sides fought hard in a tight affair on the synthetic, but neither was able to make a breakthrough as chances stagnated on a physical afternoon.

With scores tied at the break, the second half was anyone's game, but again both sides struggled to take advantage of good passages of play as the 90 minutes wound down.

But in the final moments of regulation, a short corner from the visitors found Graver-Kompos and she was able to fire home past Kailey Tonini to steal all three points for her side at the death. The result brings Canberra FC level on points with United but behind on goal difference, and both sides three points behind pace setters Belconnen United heading into Easter.
