The Canberra United Academy recovered from an opening minute goal by Monaro to run out 7-1 winners at Hawker Synthetic on Saturday afternoon.

Zoe Szeremet pounced on a poor error at the back from the Academy and made no mistake to finish cleanly and give the visitors a somewhat unexpected opening goal.

Monaro looked to hold onto their one-goal lead but just over 10 minutes later the Academy hit back and from there turned it into mostly one-way traffic.

Karly Roestbakken beat two defenders in the box before whipping a cross to the far post for Laura Hughes to head home, and when Roestbakken score herself eight minutes later the Academy were already in the lead.

The middle of the half was more back-and-forth, but Isabella Barac struck a minute before the break to deliver a hammer blow and double the advantage at half-time.

Aoife Colvill scored twice in the first quarter hour of the second half to push the lead to four goals with 30 minutes left, and Hughes completed her hat-trick with two more goals in the final 11 minutes to seal the resounding scoreline.

The Academy now prepare for a visit to Hawker from Canberra FC next Saturday while Monaro will host Woden-Weston at home after they were soundly beaten by Canberra FC.

Canberra FC turned on the class at Deakin on Sunday as they thrashed Woden-Weston 5-0 to win their third straight National Premier League Women’s match.

The 2017 champions looked to control the game from the outset, and hit the front after just three minutes as Jamie Berkeley scored the first of the game.

Lily Bardsley struck only 11 minutes later as Canberra FC rolled over the top of their surprised visitors, and Bardsley increased the lead 20 minutes later with her second and the hosts third in a dominant display. Just as it looked set to be a three-goal margin at the break, Diarna Genovesi finished off a tidy team move in the dying minutes to seal a four-goal lead heading into half-time and round out a one-sided first 45.

The second half proved to be a different affair as Woden-Weston got themselves back into the game and created chances of their own, but a brilliant strike from Grace Gill proved to be the only goal of the half as she rounded out the scoreline with 10 minutes to play.

Canberra FC now face the Academy next Saturday at Hawker while Woden-Weston will travel to Riverside looking to get their campaign back on track against Monaro.
