Big second half snaps Wanderers streak

Monaro Panthers FC 0 def by. Woden-Weston FC 3 (Cassia McGlashian 52’, 86’, Chong 68’)

Woden-Weston broke their 2 match-losing streak with a strong victory over the Monaro Panthers on a damp Sunday afternoon at Riverside.

The game had a lot of excitement early with Woden-Weston only taking eight minutes into the first half to have their first big chance. Lotta Raap found herself in the middle of the box for an open goal, only to smack her effort against the crossbar.

While Woden-Weston had the better of the opportunities in the first half, Monaro were not without their chances, with much of their attack coming off of the counter.

The hosts tried their best to capitalise on mistakes at the back with Zoe Szeremet and Eleanor Jones looking most dangerous for the Panthers; intercepting a handful of poor passes and attacking on goal but to no avail and the scores remained locked at 0-0 come half-time.

Woden-Weston came out strong in the second half and took the lead through a penalty in the 52nd minute. An awkward challenge in the box saw the ref point to the spot with Cassia McGlashian stepping up to place her shot in the bottom left corner.

On as a substitute at the half, Woden-Weston’s Shqauille Chong doubled the Wanderers lead with a great shot on the turn from just outside the area that was out of the keepers reach and in with 68 minutes played.

A tough midfield battle ensued from then on, but McGlashian sealed Woden-Weston’s win as she completed her brace in the dying minutes. McGlashan shimmed and turned on the edge of the area before driving her shot over the keeper and in to round out the scoreline.

Woden-Weston will now face Gungahlin United next week while Monaro take on Canberra Olympic in a tough meeting.
