Monaro Panthers FC 3 (Darby Whiteley 7’, Zoe Szeremet 24’, Jasmine Zabel 65’) def. Tuggeranong United Football Club 1 (Adrianna Ilheo 10’)

By Mat Stramandinoli

Monaro claimed their second victory of the season, with a tough fought win over Tuggeranong United at Duncan on Sunday afternoon.

The match got off to a fast start, with three goals inside the opening 25 minutes. Darby Whiteley found herself in space with the ball at her feet after a deflection, and made no mistake to open the scoring in the seventh minute.

Just three minutes later, United’s Adrianna Ilheo answered back, taking off at pace down the wing before blazing a strike across the goalkeeper and in at the far post

Parity lasted just under 15 minutes though, as Zoe Szeremet capitalised on a poor pass at the back and she steadied herself before chipping the ball over and into the net. A number of chances followed at both ends but the two sides entered the break with Monaro leading 2-1.

The second half began at a much quieter pace, and continued that way up until the 20-minute marj, as Jasmine Zabel fired home from inside the box to extend the lead to two goals.

That was enough to seal the deal for Monaro, and they will now take on Canberra FC in a testing clash, while Tuggeranong United will also have their work cut out for them against Belconnen United.

Woden-Weston Football Club 2 (Anna Vandenbroucke 26', Lotta Raap 86') def. by Canberra United Academy 8 (Aoife Colvill 30', 33', 38', 54', 60', Hayley Taylor-Young 69', Karly Roestbakken 48', 72')

The Canberra United Academy dealt Woden-Weston’s early top four hopes a blow with an 8-2 thrashing on Sunday at Woden Park thanks in large part to a five-goal haul from Aoife Colvill.

Woden-Weston got on the board first as Anna Vandenbroucke scored just inside the half-hour mark following a competitive first 25 minutes.

But the match soon turned on its head with a sensational run of play from Colvill and the Academy. The youngster scored three times in just eight minutes to seal an early hattrick and give her side a commanding lead at the half-time break.

Karly Roestbakken extended the advantage just three minutes into the second stanza as the Academy began to run away with the contest. Colvill scored her fourth from the spot nine minutes into the half and when she put away her fifth with 30 minutes to go the door was shut on Woden-Weston.

The Academy continued to push though and Hayley Taylor-Young and Roestbakken found time to add two in three minutes to push the lead to an emphatic 8-1. Lotta Raap grabbed a consolation for the hosts with four minutes remaining in the match, but their fate was sealed.

The Academy now take on Gungahlin United on Saturday evening while the Wanderers take on Canberra Olympic with both teams looking to get back on track.

Canberra Olympic 0 def. by Canberra FC 3 (Grace Gill 5’, Rachael Goldstein 22’, 23’)

Canberra Olympic’s recent struggles continued on Sunday as they slumped to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Canberra FC.

The loss is a fourth straight for Olympic, while it is a sixth straight win for Canberra FC to round out the first cycle of matches.

Grace Gill got the visitors off to the perfect start with a good finish just five minutes in, and Canberra FC continued to push from there as they controlled the large part of early proceedings.

They were cruising up by a goal around the 20 minute mark, but then proceeded to turn the game completely against Olympic in a short span.

The in-form Rachael Goldstein struck twice inside two minutes to suddenly turn a narrow lead into a big margin, and carried that lead through until the break.

The second half was a much quieter affair as Olympic looked to work back into the game and hold out the visitors, and the contest fizzled out to remain 3-0 at the final whistle.

Olympic now face a bounce-back meeting with Woden-Weston at O’Connor, and Canberra FC take on Monaro looking to keep pace with Belconnen United.
