NPL Round 9 Wrap

Woden-Weston 4 (Martin Deng 10’, 78’, Michael Adams 28’, Frederick Olaie Yinka-Kehinde 68’) def. Riverina Rhinos 1 (Danyon Arnold 57’)

Woden-Weston put in a convincing display at Woden Park just two days after their FFA Cup win to finish 4-1 winners over the Riverina Rhinos on Saturday.

Martin Deng opened the scoring just 10 minutes in with a good finish, and the hosts looked to push the pace early on. Michael Adams converted from the penalty spot just before the half hour mark to extend the lead to two goals, and the Rhinos were unable to hit back before the break, going into the sheds down by two.

But Danyon Arnold breathed life into the visitors 13 minutes into the half with a good goal to cut the lead in half with just over half an hour to play. Nine minutes later though Frederick Olaide Yinka-Kehinde pushed it back to two and it became a bridge too far for the Rhinos when Deng grabbed his second 12 minutes from time.

Lachlan Fields received a second yellow for the hosts to see them reduced to 10 men for the final few minutes, but the Wanderers stayed out in front. They now take on Gungahlin United in the FFA Cup on Tuesday night, while the Rhinos are back in Canberra next week to face Tuggeranong United.

Gungahlin United 3 (Thomas Muller 2’, 37’, Josh Gaspari 24’) def. Monaro Panthers 1 (Sam Smith 32’)

A fast start from Gungahlin United in a thrilling first half saw them take home a 3-1 win over Monaro Panthers on Saturday afternoon.

United could hardly have started better as Ben Obst threaded a ball through to Thomas Muller, who wasted no time to tuck it home in just the second minute.

Tom Krklec was brought down inside the area just after the 20-minute mark and Josh Gaspari made no mistake from the penalty spot to double the lead as the clock edged towards 25 minutes.

Sam Smith dragged his side back into the game 13 minutes from half-time with a well taken goal after a mistake at the back from United, but five minutes later Muller grabbed his second and pushed the lead back to two goals as Antoni Timotheou squared the ball to him on a breakaway.

They maintained that lead until the break and looked to extend it in the second half but were unable to finish a plethora of chances.

United now take on Woden-Weston in the FFA Cup on Tuesday night, before taking on Belconnen United next weekend, while Monaro have the bye in round 10 ahead of an important matchup with Canberra Olympic the week after, where they will look to repeat their one-goal victory of round two.

Belconnen United 2 (Marty Raines 4’, Jason Ugrinic 44’) def. Tigers FC 1 (Nicolas Villafane 16’)

Belconnen United got a new era of coaching underway in the perfect manner as two first half goals helped them to a 2-1 win over Tigers FC on a chilly Saturday night.

Full report here.

Tuggeranong United 2 (Sean Kiddey 3’, Tom Pagett 58’) drew. Canberra FC 2 (Ian Graham 55’, Michael Taurasi 77’)

Tuggeranong United kept pace with Canberra FC at the top of the table as they became the first side to take points off the ladder leaders this season.

The hosts jumped out to a perfect start at Kambah as Sean Kiddey finished well just three minutes in after Ivan Pavlak struck the bar down the other end.

The scoreline remained unchanged at half-time as they teams hit the sheds, but ten minutes after the break Ian Graham levelled proceedings for the visitors.

That lasted only three minutes though thanks to Tom Pagett’s goal, and the game was well poised heading into the final 30 minutes. Both sides battled well, United to keep the lead and Canberra FC to pull them back, and it was the latter who proved successful as Michael Taurasi headed home with 13 minutes to play to level the game.

The results leaves Canberra FC top of the table with 19 points, three ahead of United in second and four ahead of Canberra Olympic who they face next weekend.
