NPL Round 10 Wrap

Woden-Weston 2 (Connor Bill 16’, Bul Juach 64’) Tigers FC 3 (Nicolas Villafane 11’, 22’, Mark Shields 90+2’)

Tigers FC picked up a much-needed win on Saturday thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Mark Shields that helped them past Woden-Weston.

Tigers jumped out to an early lead as the impressive Nicolas Villafane scored, but that only lasted five minutes up to when Connor Bill struck to level proceedings. The goal flurry continued though as Woden-Weston gave away a penalty, and Villafane stepped up to confidently score his and the visitors second goal. Tigers had plenty of the ball and forced a number of corners as they approached the half, but were unable to capitalise as the score remained 2-1 heading into the break.

The Wanderers hauled themselves back into the game 19 minutes into the half when Bul Juach converted from the penalty spot, but it was not to be for the hosts as Mark Shields fired home in the second minute of stoppage time to seal a much-needed win for Tigers.

Tuggeranong United 3 (Mate Barisic 2’, Shane Murray 25’, Aisosa Ihegie 58’) def. Riverina Rhinos 0

As they did last weekend against Canberra FC the hosts started fast, as Andrew Slavich’s goalbound cross was flicked on by Mate Barisic to give United the lead. That put the Rhinos on the back foot early, and they struggled to create clear cut chances against an energetic Tuggeranong outfit. United continued to press though, and they were rewarded after 25 minutes Slavich was brought down in the box and Shane Murray made no mistake from the spot to double their advantage.

The fiery encounter remained a two-goal game at the break, and it took Aisosa Ihegie only 13 minutes to extend that lead in the second half and all but seal the game. Rhinos looked to fight back as the encounter continued to get physical, but when Joe Preece was sent off late on it wrote off the comeback hopes. The Rhinos continue to struggle after a strong start to the season, and can now have a week off before they come back to Canberra to face Gungahlin United in a fortnight.

Gungahlin United 2 (Thomas Muller 33’, Jason O’Dwyer 52’) def. Belconnen United 1 (Daniel Barac 10’)

Gungahlin United grabbed their third league win in a row to cap off a great week as they came from behind to defeat Belconnen United by a goal on Sunday.

Daniel Barac got the visitors off to a good start as he scored just ten minutes in, and Belconnen held onto their lead well as the half progressed.

But 12 minutes before the break United got back on level terms as the in-form Thomas Muller was sent through on goal and he made no mistake to tuck the ball home and ensure the sides went into the break at 1-1.

Gungahlin burst out of the blocks in the second half and just seven minutes in they hit the lead as Jason O’Dwyer scored for the hosts. Belconenn chased the game with a number of attacking substitutions but were unable to claw their way back into the match as Gungahlin finished 2-1 winners. Gungahlin now head into Saturday’s Federation Cup final with a semblance of momentum, while Belconnen can enjoy a break before hosting Woden-Weston in two weeks.
