United leave it late to take a point from Wanderers

Belconnen United 1 (Lucas Mauragis 82’) drew. Woden-Weston 1 (Olaide Yinka-Kehinde 23’)

A late strike from Lucas Mauragis has helped Belconnen United to a share of the points against Woden-Weston in their round 11 clash.

The visitors went ahead in the first half through Olaide Yinka-Kehinde’s finish, but Mauragis’ effort eight minutes from time was enough to steal a point.

Woden-Weston started the match strongly but the first real chance came as the hosts fired just wide from a set piece 11 minutes in after Marty Raines was brought down.

Another free-kick shortly after was saved well by Wanderers’ Willem Lejeune, and from there Rey Castro’s side looked to create some chances of their own. Yinka-Kehinde fired just wide with a header in the 19th minute but made no mistake a few minutes later as he finished off a great run with a tidy finish into the corner.

Blaise Vlazlovski came close two minutes later from a header, but appeared caught off guard that the ball made it all the way through a crowded area to reach him and fired over.

Cam Reinhart put a chance wide for Belconnen 13 minutes before the break, and Michael Adams had the final chance of the half for the visitors but could not convert as they went into the break up by a goal.

United came out of the break strong and Sam Whithear and Daniel Barac both missed chances narrowly as the game entered the final half hour and it almost looked as though the hosts were going to run out of time as Woden-Weston continually threatened on the counter.

But with eight minutes to go, Mauragis squeezed home a shot from inside the area in a scramble to tie the game up and grab at least a point for his side. Barac forced Lejeune into a good save with minutes remaining from a header and the Wanderers had two final chances of there own but there was no way through and scores remained locked at the final whistle.

United will now take on Tuggeranong United as the battle for fourth spot intensifies, and Woden-Weston will take on Canberra Olympic.
