NPLW Round 16 Wrap

Belconnen United Blue Devils 3 (Maddy Whittall 7', Nicole Jalocha 56', Own Goal 79')def. Monaro Panthers FC 0

Belconnen United continued their undefeated season on Saturday night with a 3-0 win over the Monaro Panthers at McKellar Park.

The result was a big improvement from Monaro on the 16-0 shellacking they suffered on their last visit, and a sign of progress through the season.

The hosts got off to a great start when Maddy Whittall found the back of the net off a good move just seven minutes in, but from there Antoni Jagarinec’s side struggled to crack the Monaro defence who remained resolute in the face of the weight of possession.

The score remained 1-0 at the break but just 11 minutes in to the second half Nicole Jalocha netted to double the lead and give Belconnen a good cushion for the rest of the match, and with 11 minutes left a Monaro own goal sealed the scoreline.

Belconnen move now onto a meeting with Tuggeranong last week as they move closer to sealing the Premiership, while Monaro face a tough test against Canberra FC.

Woden-Weston 2 (Anna Vandenbroucke 41', 51') def. By Canberra United Academy 5 (Isabella Barac 3', 81', Hayley Taylor Young 21', Sarah Morgan 32', Laura Hughes 45')

The Canberra United Academy completed a season sweep over Woden-Weston with a 5-2 win at Woden Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Academy began well when Isabella Barac netted just three minutes in to open the scoring for the second week in a row, and Hayley Taylor-Young extended the advantage just after the twenty minute mark as the Academy pulled away. 11 minutes later Sarah Morgan added a goal and it looked like the Academy may run away with it.

But Anna Vandenbroucke netted with four minutes left in the half to cut the gap, only for Laura Hughes to strike on the cusp of half-time and ensure the visitors took a three-goal lead into the sheds.

Vandenbroucke scored again though six minutes into the second stanza, and gave Woden-Weston a way back into the clash with nearly 40 minutes to play at 4-2.

However they were unable to break through and close the gap any more, and with just under 10 minutes to go Barac scored her second goal of the match to seal the result.

Canberra FC 1 (Brittany Palombi 65’) drew. Gungahlin United (Charlotte Lynch 27’)

Gungahlin United and Canberra FC played out a tight draw at Deakin on Sunday afternoon in a result that could prove important for both come the end of the season.

Tuggeranong United Football Club 1 (Rhiannon Daisley) def. By Canberra Olympic 5 (Meg McLaughlin 11', 32', Grace Field 40', Emma Guo 62', Grace Maher 63')

Canberra Olympic picked up their second win in a row with a convincing 5-1 victory over Tuggeranong United that brings them within two points of fourth spot.

Former Tuggies striker Meg McLaughlin opened the scoring 11 minutes in to continue her streak of scoring against them, and she doubled the tally with a second just after the half-hour mark, before Grace Field added a third in the 40th minute.

Tuggeranong would have been disappointed to be down by three goals heading into the break after playing well for much of the first 45, and they looked to respond coming out the other side.

The young team were unable to make the most of chances that came their way though and they were made to pay as the game ticked into it’s final half hour.

Emma Guo struck with 28 minutes to play and with United still reeling Grace Maher scored again in her second game back to push the margin out to five goals and far beyond reach.

There was still time for a consolation strike from the hosts though, and it was a sensational effort from Rhiannon Daisley that put her team on the board with around 20 minutes to play.

United now face a clash against Belconnen United in Round 17, while Olympic will host Woden-Weston at O’Connor as they continued their pursuit of fourth spot.
