NPL Round 15 Wrap

Tuggeranong United 2 (Shane Murray 24’, Regan Walsh 34’) def. Gungahlin United 1 (Own Goal 69’)

Tuggeranong United took a massive step towards securing their spot in the top four with a 2-1 win over Gungahlin United on Saturday afternoon.

Two first half goals were enough to see them home against the fast-finishing visitors as Jakob Wiseman saved a stoppage-time penalty.

Tuggeranong started strong and looked to take the game to Gungahlin, and took the lead after 24 minutes through Shane Murray’s free-kick as the midfielder continued his impressive season.

Just ten minutes later they doubled the advantage as Regan Walsh tidily finished a good move and the hosts took that lead into the break to be well on top.

The second half began with Gungahlin pushing the envelope, and as the game approached the 70 minute mark the visitors received a lifeline as Matt King put the ball into his own net.

And with five minutes of stoppage time on the clock the visitors were awarded a penalty, but Zac Barbatano’s effort was brilliantly saved by Wiseman’s diving effort to secure a big three points for Tuggeranong and leave Gungahlin fighting for their finals chances.

Tigers FC 2 (Nico Villafane 9’, Jeremias Ibarra 66’) def. Canberra FC 1 (Michael Mensah 88’)

A goal in either half from Tigers FC has helped them a an upset 2-1 victory over Canberra FC in Cooma, to throw the top four and Premiership battles wide open.

The hosts got off to nearly the perfect start through Argentine star Nicolas Villafane when he netted just nine minutes in and that put the ladder leaders on the back foot from the outset.

The half evened out from there and there were chances at both ends, but neither side were able to break through and the half finished with Gaby Wilk’s men up by a goal.

19 minutes into the second half the situation got tougher for the visitors when Ryan Keir was dismissed, and that was further compounded two minutes later as Jeremias Ibarra swept home the ball to double the hosts advantage and leave them in control.

Canberra FC were able to strike back late on through Michael Mensah, but it was too little, too late as time fizzled out and Tigers claimed a massive three points in their race for finals.

Riverina Rhinos 1 (Sam Scarfone 89’) def. Canberra Olympic 0

A goal in the dying minutes from Samuel Scarfone was enough for the Riverina Rhinos to snatch all three points against Canberra Olympic in Griffith.

Belconnen United 3 (Daniel Barac 28’, Sam Whithear 64’, 66’) def. Monaro Panthers 0

Belconnen United maintained their spot in the top four on Saturday night with a clinical win over the Monaro Panthers at McKellar Park.

The game began with United on the front foot and they created chances early, but it was not until the 28th minute that Daniel Barac opened the scoring to put give his team an important lead.

United continued to push but the Panthers held out well and the two teams remained separated by just one goal after 45 minutes.

The second half began in much the same way as both teams struggled to make a further breakthrough, but a quickfire double from Sam Whithear in a three-minute spell as the game entered its final half-hour essentially put the game to bed.

And that was how the score remained until the end as the final 20 minutes fizzled out, with Belconnen jumping back over Tigers after their earlier win and Monaro remaining on the bottom of the table.
