Canberra FC and Belconnen share spoils in Deakin thriller

By Caleb Mitchell

Canberra FC and Belconnen United shared the points at Deakin Stadium on Sunday as an exciting final 10 minutes saw both sides score.

Both sides went in to the match chasing maximum points for different reasons but neither side was able to find the winner on a blustery afternoon.

United began strongly and opened the scoring after 10 minutes as Cam Reinhart crossed the ball from the byline, and caught everyone off guard as the ball swirled over the top of Sam Brown and into the back of the net.

The hosts looked to respond and chase an equaliser as the first half wore on, but some stubborn Belconnen defending and a strong performance in goal from Finn Jurak held them at bay.

Their best chance came six minutes before the break though as Michael Mensah’s strike on the turn was tipped towards the back post by Jurak and United carried their lead into the break.

That would come undone two minutes in as the hosts caught United on the break and a square ball from Thomas James found Ivan Pavlak at the back post to fire home and level things up.

Mensah created another good chance just minutes later as he bulldozed through the Belconnen backline before firing straight at Jurak, and Marty Raines and Adrian Macor created chances after coming off the bench for Belconnen but were unable to find a way through as the second half continued on.

Canberra FC pushed forward out of midfield in the 83rd minute and Christian Pratezina was set free down the left, and his cross found Mensah who fired home from inside the area to give Paul Macor’s men a late lead.

But three minutes later they were hauled back to parity as the ball fell to Reinhart in the area and he took a touch before firing home past Brown to level scores.

The 2-2 scoreline carried over until full-time despite the game opening up late and the results leaves Canberra FC just below Canberra Olympic in second spot, while Belconnen United are now a point behind Tigers FC for fourth place.
