NPLW Round 19 Wrap

Monaro Panthers 1 (Cynthia Bangita 50’) def. Tuggeranong United 0

A solitary goal in the second half from Cynthia Bangita was enough for Monaro Panthers to sneak their fifth win of the season and keep Tuggeranong’s winless run going.

The game began with both sides probing for an opening at the other end, but neither was able to find a way through on a blustery afternoon at Googong.

That continued for the first half and the two teams remained tied at the break, unable to be separated across 45 minutes of action.

Five minutes into the second half though the Panthers broke the deadlock as they broke up a United attack and countered the other way.

An initial shot came in and Cristina Esposito looked to almost have it gathered only for Bangita to knock the ball away and into the net to take the lead.

That proved to be enough for the Panthers as they saw out the rest of the half to move within two points of sixth spot.

Woden-Weston 0 def. by Belconnen United 4 (Bronte Pyke 9', 44', 81', Jasmine Maguire 22')

A 4-0 win from Belconnen United helped them claim their eighth straight Premiership on Sunday afternoon.

Bronte Pyke netted the first goal of a hat-trick as she opened the scoring nine minutes in, and Jasmine Maguire scored 13 minutes later to double the lead.

United remained in control for much of the first half and when Pyke scored her second a minute before the half-time break the visitors were cruising.

Pyke completed her hat-trick nine minutes from time in the second half to round out the score line and seal an emphatic 17th win of the season for her side.

Canberra FC 2 (Grace Gill 10', Marcia Wallis-Caporn 18') def. by Canberra United Academy 4 (Aoife Colvill 4', 45', 69', 72')

Four goals from Aoife Colvill helped the Canberra United Academy to close within a point of Canberra FC in second spot, with a 4-2 win over them at Deakin.

Golden boot leader Colvill opened the scoring for the visitors after four minutes, volleying home Karly Roestbakken’s cross from the left at the near post.

But six minutes later Canberra FC were level through Grace Gill as the experienced striker capitalised on a defensive error to finish calmly from close range.

Canberra FC turned that goal into momentum and took the lead eight minutes after through Marcia Wallis-Caporn as again the Academy made a crucial mistake at the back to gift the hosts the advantage.

It looked like Mark Risteski’s side would take that lead into the break, only for Colvill to latch onto a through ball from Emma Ilijoski in the final minute of the half, spin and finish to lock it up at 2-2 at half-time.

The second half began evenly and it took a while for the Academy to go ahead, but two goals in three minutes from Colvill as the game ticked over the 70-minute mark was the killer blow they needed and sealed the deal at 4-2. Canberra FC turn their attention to tonight’s Federation Cup match with Canberra FC, while the Academy meet Woden-Weston on Thursday night.

Gungahlin United 1 (Nat De Marco 85’) def. by Canberra Olympic 2 (Alexia Forner 11’, 46’)

Canberra Olympic took a big step towards wrapping up a top four spot as Alexia Forner’s brace helped them to a 2-1 win over Gungahlin United on Sunday.
