Canberra United Academy 6 (Molly Lawless 16’, Sasha Grove 26’, 78’, Emily Jensen 32’, Hayley Taylor-Young 81’, Isabel Mulhall 90+1’) def. Tuggeranong United 0

The Canberra United Academy maintained their winning streak in the league with a 6-0 victory over Tuggeranong United at Hawker Football Centre.

The Academy got on the board early as Hayley Taylor-Young stole the ball from a defender and raced down the wing before squaring the ball to Molly Lawless who fired just inside the near post.

They had their second as the ball was bundled over the line from close range by Sasha Grove and six minutes following it was Emily Jensen’s turn to score just after the half hour mark.

Tuggeranong suffered a further blow at the break as English forward Alice Linn was substituted with a quad injury, but United did well to halt the flow of the Academy as they kept them scoreless early through the second half.

They could only hold out for so long though, and Sasha Grove was played through with a long ball in the 78th and she had time to slow down and convert to push the lead to four. Taylor-Young got a goal of her own as the clock ticked past the 80th minute and there was one more in the bag as Isabel Mulhall converted during stoppage time.

Tuggeranong will host Woden-Weston next weekend, while the Canberra United Academy host Canberra FC in a blockbuster at Hawker.

Monaro Panthers 2 (Kaitlyn Joy 5’, Sienna Summers 55’)def. by Canberra FC 7 (Rachael Goldstein 21’, 56’, Mel Bunker 25’, Brittany Palombi 31’, 40’, Ivana Galic 69’, D’Arcy 90+2’)

Canberra FC maintained their reign at the top of the competition with a 7-2 win over Monaro Panthers at Riverside Stadium.

The Panthers got off the mark first though as Kaitlyn Joy tucked home a penalty into the top corner just five minutes in, and they retained that lead for just over 15 minutes before Rachael Goldstein scored her first and the visitors had the lead four minutes later thanks to Melissa Bunker.

Goals started to flow for Nik Brozinic’s side with Brittany Palombi adding to the scoresheet just after the 30 minute mark and she had a second five minutes later with a free-kick that beat everyone from a long way out, and Canberra FC took a three goal lead into half-time.

The hosts struck first again in the second half, this time through Sienna Summers as she capitalised on Canberra FC failing to deal with a corner.

That joy was short lived though as Goldstein struck again just a minute later, twisting and turning in the area before firing home past the keeper.

Ivana Galic thundered home a header with just over twenty minutes left and there was time left for Lucy D’Arcy to get a goal in added time to round out the scoreline.

Canberra Olympic 0 def. by Gungahlin United 3 (Jade Brown 4’, Erika Pennyfield 41’, Rachael Corbett 53’)

Gungahlin United jumped into the top four with a 3-0 win over Canberra Olympic at O’Connor on Sunday afternoon.

Jade Brown gave Diego Iglesias’ side the perfect start as she fired home just four minutes in after robbing an Olympic defender of possession, and the visitors dominated possession without pressure from Olympic. United almost held out for the rest of the first half but they come undone through a mistake at the back, as Madeline Sanfrancesco’s mistimed clearance only went as far as Erika Pennyfield who slotted it home past the stranded keeper from distance.

The second half began in much the same fashion and it took just eight minutes for United to score their third and final goal as Rachael Corbett getting on the end of Alex Paterson’s corner to fire them into a 3-0 lead.

Canberra Olympic now turn to a daunting visit to McKellar Park next Saturday, while Gungahlin host the Wagga City Wanderers on Sunday.
