Gungahlin United 6 (Ella-Rose Brown 3’, 17’, 44’, Elke Aitolu 30’, Erika Pennyfield 67’, Maddie Perceval 76’)def. Monaro Panthers 1 (Alicia Meuronen 72’)

By Jakob Gisik

A first-half hat trick from Ella-Rose Brown has spurred Gungahlin United to a 6-1 win over the Monaro Panthers at the AIS on Sunday.

The result sees Gungahlin jump to second on the NPLW ladder following four straight victories, while Monaro remain with just one win from five outings in 2019.

It took Brown less than three minutes to grab her first, as she turned in a shot from an acute angle following a neat pass across goal by Erika Pennyfield.

Brown doubled her tally 14 minutes later with what can only be described as a classic “cross or shot” moment.

After finding herself out on the right flank, Brown sent what appeared to be a cross into the penalty box, but the ball ended up floating over the head of Monaro goalkeeper Jelena Josipovic and into the goal.

Gungahlin made it 3-0 right on the half-hour mark, after a passage of slick passing ended with Elke Aitolu curling a shot into the bottom corner from 20 yards out.

Brown then completed her hat trick just prior to half-time, as she picked the pocket of Zoe Miller deep in the penalty area and slotted the ball past a stranded Josipovic in goals.

The Panthers nearly clawed a goal back straight after half-time, when a lovely pass from Elizabeth Edwards found Alyssa Bozinovski inside the six-yard box, but the latter skewed her shot just wide of the mark.

Edwards was involved again in the 62nd minute, this time nudging a shot past goalkeeper Kailey Tonini that looked destined for the back of the net, only to be swept off the line by a Gungahlin defender.

For all Monaro’s hard work, it was Gungahlin that struck first in the second-half, after Pennyfield tapped the ball in from close-range in the 67th minute.

But the Panthers pegged one back five minutes later thanks to a trademark Alicia Meuronen strike that caught Tonini off her line from 30 yards out.

Their success would be short lived though; Maddy Perceval volleyed home from a corner in the 76th minute to push Gungahlin’s lead back out to five.

That was how the margin remained as neither side were able to manufacture any real chances in the final 10 minutes of play.

Gungahlin will now be looking to make it five wins on the trot when they play the Canberra United Academy on Sunday, while Monaro have the unenviable task of hosting Belconnen United on Saturday.

Tuggeranong United 0 def. by Canberra FC 8 (Sharon Chao 6’, 19’, 80’, Vanessa Ryan 16’, Rachael Goldstein 61’, 71’, Brittany Palombi 68’, Mel Bunker 89’)

Canberra FC got right back on track following their Federation Cup defeat with an 8-0 thrashing of Tuggeranong United at Greenway on Sunday afternoon.

Sharon Chao netted a hat-trick while Rachael Goldstein added two to leave their side big winners.

Key Moments |

Opening Goals: Sharon Chao got the start after a strong showing in the extra-time loss to Belconnen, and got her side off the mark early, before Vanessa Ryan got the second and Chao got her brace just minutes later to leave Canberra FC 3-0 up.

Second-half opener: It took over 15 minutes of action, but Goldstein got Canberra FC’s fourth goal, and after Brittany Palombi added the team’s fifth she grabbed her second.

Final two: It was left to Chao completing her hat-trick and a final goal from Mel Bunker to wrap up the scoring on a big afternoon for Nik Brozinic’s side.

Canberra FC will have the bye next weekend and a chance to freshen their legs, while Tuggeranong will look for their second win of the season against Canberra Olympic.
