NPL2 Round 10 Preview

Brindabella Blues v Weston-Molonglo | Saturday, 3pm @ Everlast Enclosed

We find ourselves at the halfway point of the season, and as such the Magpies make the trip to Everlast Enclosed in the reverse fixture to Round 1. Since they first met these two teams have had differing fortunes, with Weston sitting in third just a win off top spot while the Blues find themselves rooted to the foot of the table. Weston won handsomely 4-1 in the round one fixture and are favourites to again take the biscuits however they are missing reigning golden-boot winner Andrew Sellers, while the recent return of Jono Toole exponentially improves Brindabella’s fire power and chances of victory. Jez Butler will be desperate for three points to move of the bottom of the table and possibly kick start a finals push, while Mr 305, Mr Worldwide, Mase Tate will equally be as excited for the points, like a Pitbull in a china shop, with a chance at top spot a possibility.

Uno, dos, tres, cuatro.

O’Connor Knights vs Wagga City Wanderers | Saturday, 3pm @ Kaleen Enclosed

O’Connor Knights will welcome Wagga City with revenge on their mind after the 4-1 hammering they received on the road in Round 1. Since that game however the Knights have been almost perfect dropping just 2 points out of 21, to find themselves as league leaders, while Wagga on the other-hand will be disappointed to be sitting outside of the top 4 in their first season in Canberra considering the vast amount of talent they possess. The bookies would have the Knights favourites here, but with Wagga’s strength going forward they should not be written off, and a win would cut the gap with the current league leaders to just 4 points.

Canberra White Eagles v ANU FC | Saturday, 3pm @ Woden Park

The students make the daunting trip to the Eyrie in what is clearly the match of the round between the two most successful teams at this level of the past decade. While ANU has wowed many with their FFA cup performances, they will be disappointed to be sitting in 4th spot at the halfway mark in the league. This is mainly due to their slow start to the season, which included a first round 1-0 loss to the Eagles. The Eagles on the other hand had a blistering start to the season with five straight victories and tasted defeat just once in round 8, and that sees them sit second to the Knights only on goal difference. ANU will likely be without the league’s leading scorer Rowan Peterkin, however still possess multiple goal threats while the Eagles are looking more and more reliant on Milan Santrac and Nik Noveski to find the net. This game is set to have a big bearing on the final league lacings so expect a bit of hot sauce.

Queanbeyan City v Southern Tablelands | Sunday, 3pm @ Riverside

Queanbeyan City welcome the Steamers to the pristine Riverside stadium, with rumours abounding that they are leaderless with the possible loss of player/coach Goran Josifovski. This season hasn’t been going quite to plan for the reigning premiers, currently sitting sixth with just two wins. United sit in eighth with two victories of their own, one of which was an impressive 4-2 win over City way back in round one. Both sides have been struggling to find a consistent goal scorer, with two of the league’s top number nines in Aaron Swanson and Davey McCarron each playing just two games this term. If either team can manage to get their nine on the pitch that will go a long way to grabbing the upper hand in this contest. With both sides more than two wins off the top four, if they don’t start picking up maximum points very soon then they can kiss their finals chances goodbye.
