Belconnen United claim ninth straight Premiership

Antoni Jagarinec and Belconnen United claimed a ninth straight Premier League Premiership on Sunday as they ran out 9-0 winners in Wagga Wagga.

It means the Blue Devils have top spot wrapped up with two rounds to play, and Canberra FC mathematically unable to catch them having only one game left.

Jagarinec’s side shot out of the blocks against the Wagga City Wanderers, scoring three goals in the opening four minutes before the goals dried up momentarily.

Nicole Jalocha added a further goal in the first half before Keira Bobbin and Catherine Brown both netted twice in the second half and Alexia Forner added a goal to round off the total with Brown finishing the day with four goals.

Speaking after the win today Jagarinec said that the feeling amongst the squad was one of elation, but knowing that with two weeks still to go there is plenty of work to be done.”

“Elation, absolutely,” he said of the vibe.

“It’s the trophy that we really single out at the start of the year, the Premiership is the one that we want.

“The girls were up for it today and knew it was on the line, and we came out and scored three in the first four minutes, a really strong performance and we have achieved it again.”

The Blue Devils are yet to be beaten in the league and have conceded just two goals, and in June picked up another Federation Cup title to put them on course for the treble in 2019.

A core group has been present with Jagarinec ever since his first season at Belconnen including some who have won all nine Premierships with him, and the veteran coach said it is what matters the most to him.

“That’s probably what I’m proudest of, within this program,” he said.

“To have the kind of retention rate we do, that core group of senior players that have been there since day one is just awesome.”

“The amount of players that have started with the club and are now playing first grade is great, and while that ‘production line’ is definitely there, I’m over the moon to have shared the journey with those girls who have won every Premiership with me.”

Jagarinec, Alen Marin and the team now look ahead to a meeting with Monaro next weekend, a final round clash with the Canberra United Academy and then a likely matchup with Canberra FC in the 2019 Qualifying Final in the first week of Finals.
