Competitions to kick off this weekend

Capital Football's winter competitions will kick off this weekend after the ACT Government announced that full-contact sporting competitions may recommence from midday 17 July 2020.

The ACT Government is taking a cautious, staged approach to easing of restrictions in response to the outbreaks in Victoria and NSW and this decision is being made now in line with public health advice.

While football competitions can commence, the other conditions of stage 2.2 eased restrictions remain, including gatherings of no more than 100 people.

Capital Football CEO Phil Brown welcomed the ACT Government's decision.

"It is very exciting news that football can return this weekend after several difficult months," Mr Brown said. "Our football community has been responsible during this time but we need to continue to be mindful of the risk COVID-19 continues to present.

"We need to remain vigilant and proactive to mitigate the risk of increased infections, which could cause a reintroduction of the suspension of football activities.

"As such, Capital Football is committed to the principle of 'Get in, Play, Get out'."

In applying this principle, the following activities are not permitted at Capital Football matches this winter season:

  • formal pre-match walkouts to the pitch by the referees and teams
  • formal or informal pre and post match handshakes
  • formal or informal pre and post match team photos
  • any other formal pre and post match activity (i.e. gathering at halfway or the centre circle for a moment's silence)

To assist clubs in managing spectators, Capital Football also asks that only essential people attend matches this weekend and that where possible only one parent or guardian attends per player.

Mr Brown also reminded participants to stay home if they are unwell and to always adhere to Capital Football's Return to Play in a COVID-Safe Environment plan.

"We appreciate everyone's support to comply with the public health order, and willingness to work together to protect the ongoing opportunity for our community to play football," Mr Brown said.

"We might have to do things differently now, so please be patient and remember to appreciate the little things that we missed while we were on the sidelines.

"Most importantly of all, make sure that you, your teammates, your family and your football community stay safe.

"I look forward to seeing all of our participants out on the field this weekend enjoying our great game."
