NPL1 Round 5 Wrap

Tuggeranong United FC 1 (Buesnel 42’) drew with West Canberra Wanderers FC 1 (Pena 8’)

The season's first southside derby ended in a stalemate, with Tuggeranong United and the West Canberra Wanderers drawing 1-1 at Kambah.

The Wanderers struck early in the 8th minute with Alessandro Pena slotting it past United Goalkeeper Jakeb Wisman to make it 1-0.

The home side hit back just before the half-time whistle with Harrison Buesnel heading it in after a Tuggeranong corner to level the score to 1-1 at the 43rd minute.

The second half proved a rough one for both sides. Players tempers flared letting the crowd know this derby meant business.

With close opportunities from both sides late into the game, neither could seem to find the back of the net, leaving the score at 1-1.

Canberra Croatia FC 1 (Ugrninc 54’) def by Belconnen United FC 2 (Kreskas 3’, Piccolo 28’)

Belconnen United FC took home an important 2-1 win over premiership favourites Canberra Croatia FC on Saturday.

Christian Kreskas scored his first ever NPL goal with his first touch putting Belconnen up 1-0 in the 4th minute.

The Blue Devils were then awarded a penalty in the 27th minute after Darren Bailey was brought down inside the CCFC box.

Michael Piccolo’s shot was saved by goalkeeper Sam Brown, but he managed to tuck away the rebound to double their lead.

The second half proved to be a busy one for Belconnen goalkeeper Jordan Thurtell as Canberra Croatia dominated in attack and possession.

Jason Ugrinic was finally able to put Canberra Croatia back in the game after a fast counter attack bringing the score to 2-1.

Despite a dominant second half from Canberra Croatia, Belconnen handed them their second successive home defeat.

Tigers FC 5 (Popovich 16’, 53’, Borgna 30’, Gulevski 32’, Strika 82’) beat Canberra Olympic FC 0

A strong start from the Tigers saw them take the lead after 16 minutes. Nikolas Popovich scored his first after a powerful shot from Tony Madaffari caused the Olympic keeper to spill his shot, with Popovich there to slot in the rebound.

Tigers continued to dominate the first half with Julian Borgna and Joshua Gulevski getting on the scoresheet, the Tigers enjoying a comfortable 3-0 lead at half time.

Olympic started the second half strongly, with an early chance from Allen James. However a second goal for Nikolas Popovich after some magical footwork to get through the Olympic defence solidified their lead.

Tigers secured their fifth when Roko Strika cut inside off the left wing and found the bottom right corner with a fizzing shot, sealing the 5-0 victory for Tigers FC.

Monaro Panthers 3 (Habtemariam 31’, Domenici 49’, 68’) beat Gungahlin United 2 (Bernabo-Madrid 11’, John 59’)

Monaro ran onto the field at the AIS looking to break their losing streak. They started off quickly, looking to catch Gungahlin United off guard, but they could not convert the chances they created early in the half.

Gungahlin withstood the early pressure from Monaro and retaliated through a goal from Bernabo-Madrid as he headed home Michael John’s cross to put Gungahlin in the lead.

Monaro managed to equalise it in the 31st minute when Jeremy Habtemariam found space at the top of the Gungahlin box. His shot took a deflection, steering it into the bottom corner as the Gungahlin goal keeper was left with nothing but watch it roll in.

The start of the second half saw goals for both sides as Stephen Domenici netted early from a bad back pass by the Gungahlin defence. Ten minutes later Gungahlin’s Michael John’s deflected shot was lobbed over the goalkeeper into the back of the net.

It was Monaro who would score the crucial goal late on as Stephen Domenici received the ball from a Monaro cross and on the turn hit a spectacular volley to seal the win for Monaro Panthers and more importantly their first win of the season.
