West Canberra Wanderers Hitting Their Stride

In her first season as a player/coach for the West Canberra Wanderers, Emma Stanbury is proud of how her team is progressing.

“The most rewarding thing for me as a coach right now is seeing how much they’re stepping up week in, week out,” Stanbury said.

After losing their first three rounds of the NPLW, the side has gone on to comprehensively win their next two as well as qualify for the Federation Cup Grand Final.

“I don’t think the competition realises how much potential we have, we’re definitely underdogs but it’s exciting times for the Wanderers girls,” she said.

“We’ve got a lot of momentum behind us at the moment which is fantastic.

“The first few games that we had it was a very new looking squad so it was just a process of learning how each other plays and learning how to gel with each other on the field, and we’re starting to get that.

“So going into this weekend the girls are really excited and we’ve got a lot of good energy around the club at the moment so hopefully we grab another win.”

The Wanderers are taking on Gungahlin United FC on Sunday, with their 2-1 Federation Cup win still fresh in their minds.

“We know what we need to watch out for, and we know what works for us and why we won,” West Canberra Wanderers’ Tiana Jaber said.

“They [Gungahlin] certainly are an impressive team but now that we are gelling together, I think we definitely shocked them.”

The Westfield W-League player is enjoying the challenges of her first season in the Capital.

“Every game I am going in blind, so why I came down here is it’s a good challenge, because Sydney is saturated with players and I know all of them, I’ve been there my whole life.

“So coming down here it’s what I’m looking for, to step up and force myself to prove my mental and physical game.

“I’m lucky I have Emma preparing me every weekend. She manages the team really well and tells us what we have to know, what we need to work on and remember so I trust her and I know we’re going to do well.”

Gungahlin United FC hosts the Wanderers from 3pm on Sunday at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval.
